The initiative addresses a "harvest now, decrypt later" threat, where encrypted data could be intercepted today and decrypted once powerful quantum computers become available—a critical risk for long-held digital assets.

The implementation is structured in phases, with formal testing of NIST-standardized algorithms against real XRP Ledger workloads slated for the first half of 2026. A key structural advantage for XRP is its native support for key rotation, allowing users to change cryptographic keys without moving funds to new addresses. Ripple is collaborating with the specialized research group Project Eleven on this effort, which includes validator-level tests and a post-quantum custody wallet prototype.
