XRP Gains Ground Through Asian Expansion and Institutional Inflows

XRP surges 5% as Rakuten Pay integration in Japan boosts consumer use and a Ripple-Kyobo pilot in Korea targets tokenized bond settlement, backed by whale accumulation.

XRP is finding fresh momentum through a dual-track strategy of consumer adoption in Japan and institutional infrastructure development in South Korea. The digital asset, currently trading at $1.43, has gained nearly five percent over the past week, offering some relief to investors who have seen it decline roughly 24 percent since the start of the year.

A significant new partnership with Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten is putting XRP in front of millions of consumers. Since April 15, users of the Rakuten Pay app can utilize XRP at over 5 million merchant locations across Japan. While the token is converted to Rakuten Cash and then to Yen at the point of sale, the integration is notable. XRP was the only one of five listed tokens, which included Dogecoin and Stellar, to receive a direct link to the payment application. The service also links to Rakuten’s massive loyalty program, allowing users to convert trillions of circulating points directly into XRP. Further expansion is planned, with Rakuten aiming to connect its wallet to Rakuten Bank by the third quarter of 2026, potentially enabling direct fiat-to-XRP conversion for 17 million bank customers.

On the institutional front, Ripple has partnered with Kyobo Life Insurance, one of South Korea's top three insurers, to pilot the country's first blockchain-based settlement system for tokenized government bonds using Ripple Custody. The project aims to compress the traditional two-day settlement cycle to near real-time and will explore the regulatory feasibility of stablecoin-based payment rails. This move aligns with South Korea's evolving regulatory landscape; amendments to the Capital Markets Act passed by the National Assembly in January 2026 now recognize blockchain-based ledgers as valid securities registers. The Boston Consulting Group estimates South Korea's tokenized securities market could reach approximately $249 billion by 2030.

Supporting this operational build-out, on-chain data reveals substantial accumulation by large investors. Analysts report that so-called whales purchased around 360 million XRP, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, over a seven-day period. This activity coincides with Ripple transferring 75 million tokens, a large portion to exchange Coinbase, which market observers largely interpret as routine liquidity management rather than a precursor to a sell-off.

The technical picture for XRP is also showing signs of improvement. The daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator generated its first buy signal since January on April 21, a pattern that has historically preceded notable price advances. The price is currently holding above the 50-day moving average of $1.39, though it faces a stiff resistance level at $1.45 where many historical positions reach their break-even point. A sustained breakout above this level could pave the way for a move toward $1.80.

In the United States, the fundamental backdrop is brightening. US authorities classified XRP as a digital commodity in March, bolstering institutional confidence. This is reflected in steady net inflows for US spot XRP ETFs, which saw $55 million in the week ending April 18—their strongest week of 2026. Cumulative ETF inflows have now reached $1.27 billion. Market participants are also looking toward the US Senate, where the CLARITY Act is slated for parliamentary deliberation in May. The legislation aims to establish clear rules for digital assets, and its passage could significantly strengthen XRP's position as a bridge currency in regulated markets.

While the current Kyobo pilot does not directly utilize XRP for settlement, Ripple’s broader strategy is coming into focus: mass-market utility in Japan paired with institutional-grade financial infrastructure in South Korea, connected through long-time partner SBI Holdings. The success of this approach hinges on the transition of the South Korean pilot into full production and the continued solidification of supportive regulatory frameworks.
