XPeng Unveils Aggressive Strategy with New Extended-Range SUV
07.03.2026 - 07:15:05 | boerse-global.deChinese electric vehicle maker XPeng has launched a fresh offensive in the competitive SUV market, introducing a new variant of its G6 model equipped with a range extender. This move is a direct response to shifting consumer preferences and intense domestic rivalry, aiming to solidify the company's standing through a combination of exceptional driving range and cutting-edge AI software.
Market Response and Strategic Positioning
Investors reacted positively to the product reveal and the accompanying technology roadmap. On Friday, XPeng shares advanced by 6.03%, closing at €14.95. This performance marks a significant recovery from the stock's 52-week low, which was recorded just days earlier. Despite this uptick, the fundamental picture remains challenging, with the equity still down approximately 14% since the start of the year.
The vehicle enters the market with a starting price of 186,800 yuan, supported by limited-time promotional discounts available until the end of March. The success of this strategic pivot will become clearer next month when the initial sales figures for the new G6 are released.
Engineering a Range Breakthrough
At the core of the new G6 is a dual-strategy powertrain. A 1.5-liter turbo engine acts as a generator, or range extender, for a 55.8 kWh battery pack. This configuration delivers a manufacturer-claimed combined range of up to 1,704 kilometers, which XPeng states is a class-leading figure. The design directly targets consumer range anxiety while maintaining the benefits of electric propulsion.
The model is built on an 800-volt platform, enabling remarkably short charging times. Leveraging 5C supercharging technology, the SUV can gain an additional 314 kilometers of range in just twelve minutes. This fusion of long-distance capability and rapid recharge potential is a central pillar of XPeng's plan to capture market share in the mid-to-high-end SUV segment.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?
A Software-Centric Approach to Autonomy
Beyond hardware, software plays a defining role. The vehicle utilizes XPeng's new in-house Vision-Language-Action (VLA) 2.0 architecture, powered by proprietary chips. With processing power reaching up to 2,250 TOPS, the company is laying the groundwork for highly automated driving, targeting a technological leap from Level 2 to Level 4 capabilities.
The automaker is implementing a novel three-tiered software model. While the base package includes advanced features, customers can opt for paid upgrades that enable near-autonomous driving functions. This software development was executed under considerable time pressure; hundreds of iterations were completed in the 120 days leading up to the launch to fundamentally refine the vehicle's driving logic.
