Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng is embarking on a fundamental corporate transformation, set to take effect on April 1, 2026. The company will officially change its Chinese name from "XPeng Motors Co Ltd" to "XPeng Group," a move that signals a significant shift in its core business identity beyond automotive manufacturing.

A New Chapter Focused on "Physical AI"

Founder He Xiaopeng has framed this rebranding as the start of a new era for the twelve-year-old firm. The strategic heart of this evolution is a transition from being purely a carmaker to operating as a broader technology conglomerate. XPeng is consolidating its future initiatives under the umbrella of "Physical AI," which refers to artificial intelligence that interacts with and operates in the physical world.

To fuel this ambition, the company has allocated approximately $980 million for research and development expenditures in the current year alone. Key investment areas include autonomous driving systems, proprietary AI chips, and the "IRON" humanoid robot project. XPeng has set an aggressive target to achieve mass production of the IRON robot in the thousands of units per month by the end of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XPeng?

Progress is already evident in its semiconductor venture. The company's in-house Turing AI chip has seen shipments exceed 200,000 units, with a production goal of roughly one million chips set for 2026. Concurrently, XPeng aims to advance its autonomous driving technology from Level 2+ to Level 4 capabilities, with plans to deploy this system globally.

Geographic Expansion into Latin America

This strategic overhaul includes a parallel push for international growth. The company will inaugurate its first retail stores in Mexico on April 6, 2026. This launch serves as the initial phase of a three-year Latin America strategy, with market entries into Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina scheduled to follow by 2028.

Market Context and Investor Scrutiny

The transformation comes at a time when XPeng's shares are trading nearly 39% below their 52-week high, which was recorded in November 2025. Since the start of the year, the equity has declined by more than 15%. This corporate reinvention is, in part, a response to the pressure felt by investors. The ultimate test of whether the multi-billion dollar commitments to robotics and chip development will bolster the company's valuation is expected to come when the first production figures for the IRON robot are released.
