Xiaomi’s Premium Pivot: A 1,003?HP SUV and a 200?MP Leica Phone, but the Stock Still Slumps

Xiaomi unveils the high-performance YU7 GT SUV and 17 Max phone, but margin pressures from handset components and EV costs keep shares close to their 52-week low, down 26% year-to-date.

Xiaomi is betting big on pricing power. At a launch event on Thursday, the Chinese tech giant unveiled two products aimed squarely at the top of their respective markets — an electric SUV packing more than 1,000 horsepower and a smartphone with a 200?megapixel Leica camera. Yet the enthusiasm in the product lineup has not translated to the share price. The stock continues to wallow near its lows, weighed down by margin pressure in the core handset business and the heavy upfront costs of building an automotive arm.

The YU7 GT serves as the new flagship of Xiaomi’s electric vehicle division. Its tri?motor powertrain delivers a system output of 1,003 PS, good for a top speed of 300 km/h and a 0?100 km/h sprint that puts it firmly in supercar territory. More telling for everyday use, the SUV achieves a range of 705 kilometers on the CLTC cycle, while the 800?volt architecture can replenish the battery from nearly empty in around 12 minutes. On the Nürburgring, the YU7 GT posted a lap time of 7 minutes 34.931 seconds, setting a new SUV record and eclipsing the previous benchmark held by the Audi RS Q8.

CEO Lei Jun had already tempered expectations about affordability, calling the vehicle “somewhat more expensive” and designed for the “elite of the era.” Industry observers estimate a starting price near 400,000 yuan, or roughly $58,700. That positions the YU7 GT against the premium end of the EV market, where margins are fatter but brand perception is harder to earn.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

Meanwhile, the smartphone division is pushing upmarket too. The Xiaomi 17 Max, the fifth model in the current flagship series, combines a 200?megapixel Leica main camera with a 6.9?inch display, an 8,000 mAh battery, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Sales begin immediately in China, with a global rollout scheduled for the second half of the year. But the path to higher average selling prices is complicated by surging component costs. President Lu Weibing recently warned that rising prices for DRAM and NAND flash are eating into margins, and he did not rule out that future flagships could break the 10,000?yuan barrier — equivalent to around $1,400.

To support its ambitious target of delivering 550,000 vehicles this year, Xiaomi is accelerating its international expansion. In Europe, a newly established development center in Munich, headed by former BMW M technical chief Rudolf Dittrich, is preparing the brand’s market entry targeted for late 2027. In Southeast Asia, the company has appointed Xingyu Yang to oversee the rollout of the “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem from Malaysia, linking vehicles with smart?home devices.

None of that has lifted the stock. In Frankfurt, Xiaomi shares closed at €3.32 on Thursday, a stone’s throw from its 52?week low of €3.31 and only a whisker above the most recent trough of €3.17. The year?to?date decline stands at 26.11%, and the price trades 25.54% below its 200?day moving average — a chart pattern that signals persistent weakness. The 52?week high of €6.69 looks a distant memory.

The next major catalyst comes on May 26, when the board releases first?quarter earnings. Investors will be watching for delivery numbers from the SU7 series, early profitability signals from the YU7 lineup, and clarity on the planned 60 billion renminbi in artificial?intelligence investments over the next three years. The challenge for Xiaomi is to prove that its twin?track premium push can generate margins strong enough to justify a stock still trading near its floor.
