The narrative surrounding Xiaomi is currently defined by a stark contrast: ambitious global expansion on one hand, and escalating regulatory challenges on the other. This tension frames the critical question for investors—is the company signaling a new growth phase or bracing for a significant test?

Legal and Market Pressures Mount in India

A substantial legal dispute in India presents a growing financial risk. Xiaomi is contesting a ruling that alleges the company evaded approximately $72 million in customs duties related to royalty payments. The core of the disagreement hinges on whether licensing fees—ranging from 2% to 5% and paid to partners like Qualcomm—should have been included in the declared value of imported goods.

The financial implications could expand rapidly. Under Indian law, the total claim, including potential interest and penalties, might exceed $150 million. For context, Xiaomi reported a net profit of $31.7 million for its 2023/2024 fiscal year. Compounding the issue, Indian authorities have frozen around $610 million in Xiaomi India's bank accounts since 2022 over allegations of illegal remittances, which the company denies.

Operationally, India's role has shifted. Once a primary growth engine, Xiaomi's market share there has declined to 12% as of December, according to Counterpoint Research, down significantly from 31% in early 2018.

A High-Stakes Global Product Launch

Simultaneously, Xiaomi is making a bold move upmarket. On the eve of Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, the company unveiled its most extensive international hardware offensive to date, centered on the global launch of the Xiaomi 17 series.

This launch marks a direct challenge to Apple and Samsung in the premium segment. The Xiaomi 17 will retail in Europe starting at €999, with the top-tier Xiaomi 17 Ultra priced at €1,499. The event also featured the new Xiaomi Pad 8 series and other AIoT devices. To cement its premium branding, Xiaomi continues its partnership with Leica, even presenting a special "Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi" model with a €1,999 price tag.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

This strategic push, however, faces potential market headwinds. Research firm IDC forecasts a 12.9% contraction in the global smartphone market for 2026, citing ongoing chip shortages. Analysts at Gartner also anticipate rising smartphone prices. This creates a delicate balance for Xiaomi, whose volume sales have traditionally relied on the mid-range segment where consumers are particularly sensitive to price increases.

Share Performance and Upcoming Catalysts

These conflicting dynamics are reflected in the company's stock performance. Shares closed at €3.76 on Friday, recording a year-to-date decline of 16.21% and a 12-month drop of 36.13%. The current price also trades below the 50-day moving average of €4.02, a technical indicator suggesting recent upward momentum has faltered.

In a supportive move, management announced a share buyback program in late February, repurchasing shares worth 200 million Hong Kong dollars.

Investors now await the next key date. On March 24, 2026, the board is scheduled to review and approve the consolidated annual results for fiscal year 2025. The agenda also includes consideration of a final dividend—a potential catalyst that could bring the discussion about capital returns to shareholders into sharper focus.
