With MSCI Inclusion and a Key Grant Decision, ITM Power's Rally Enters a High-Stakes Phase

ITM Power's 400% rally faces test as £46.5m subsidy decision and MSCI upgrade loom. Analysts split on valuation with targets from 60p to 200p.

The next ten days could determine whether ITM Power’s blistering share price run has legs — or whether the stock has simply run too far, too fast. The electrolyser maker is staring down two binary events: a £46.5m subsidy ruling on May 26 and its elevation to the MSCI UK Small Cap Index on May 29. Together, they form a pressure point that will test the conviction behind a rally that has already delivered a 400% gain over the past twelve months.

The surge has been anything but speculative hot air. ITM Power booked a record first-half revenue of £18m, prompting management to lift its full?year guidance to a range of £40m–£43m. At the same time, the order book has swelled to £152m, with 71% of contracts now classed as profitable — a sharp improvement from the project?quality issues that dogged the company in prior years. The net cash position of roughly £200m gives the group more than three years of runway without needing to tap equity markets.

Yet analysts are drawing very different conclusions from the same set of numbers. Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to “Overweight” with a 170p price target, arguing that the company is on track to reach operating breakeven in 2028 — a full year earlier than previously expected. Jefferies is even more bullish, lifting its target from 115p to 200p and reiterating a buy rating, citing upward earnings revisions and a lower discount rate. It forecasts 2028 revenue of £169m, 54% above the consensus. Still, Jefferies acknowledges that the risk?reward profile is lopsided: its downside scenario implies a 52% loss, while the upside scenario offers only 37% appreciation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?

UBS, meanwhile, remains firmly on the sidelines. The bank keeps its target at 60p with a “Neutral” rating, warning that the current valuation has sprinted far ahead of the underlying fundamentals. That gap between 60p and 200p captures the depth of the disagreement on the Street.

Operationally, ITM Power is leaning on a new product platform to close that gap. The modular, standardised ALPHA 50 system is designed for outdoor installation across industries such as steelmaking and ammonia production. By cutting planning costs sharply, the platform aims to lift margins as volumes scale. A strategic alliance with engineering group Worley is already helping to broaden the sales pipeline, while a separate collaboration with Germany’s Rheinmetall targets the construction of a Europe?wide network of synthetic fuel plants for Nato forces — a growth vector that barely existed a year ago.

The next catalyst, however, is squarely financial. On May 26, the UK subsidy authority will rule on a £46.5m grant for the so?called Chronos production line. If the decision is positive, management intends to take a final investment decision in June on an automated manufacturing line capable of producing 1 GW of electrolyser stacks per year. That facility would be co?funded by a £40m investment from Great British Energy, giving the group the industrial capacity to match its pipeline ambitions.

Once the Chronos verdict is in, the MSCI rebalancing on May 29 will force passive funds to buy the stock regardless of conviction. For a share that has already rallied 160% since January, the combination of an overdue reality check and forced index buying makes for an unusually charged fortnight. Whether the rally consolidates or cracks will depend on how many of those catalysts deliver on their promise.
