The whiplash in Western Digital's share price over the past two days tells the story of a stock caught between a booming order book and a market that has suddenly turned sceptical about the durability of AI-driven demand. On Thursday, the stock suffered a brutal sell-off, plunging nearly 10% to €472.15 as a broad rout in semiconductor stocks spread. By Friday, however, the narrative flipped: shares surged 6.11% to €501.00 after management confirmed that hard-disk drive production is effectively sold out for the remainder of calendar 2026.

CEO Irving Tan has locked in firm orders from the company's seven largest customers, supplemented by long-term supply agreements stretching into 2027 and 2028. That visibility — rare in the notoriously cyclical memory and storage industry — has shifted the debate away from whether Western Digital can deliver growth and toward how sustainable that growth will be.

The company's transformation into a pure-play storage infrastructure provider was completed with the spin-off of its SanDisk flash business at the start of 2025. Since then, Western Digital has focused entirely on high-capacity nearline drives for data centres, a pivot that has already yielded eye-popping returns. The stock has gained 212.70% since the start of the year and an astonishing 791.62% over the past twelve months, although it remains about 28% below its 52-week high of €696.30 reached in June.

Bullish case: pricing power and planning certainty

Proponents of the bull thesis point to an unprecedented level of revenue visibility. With capacity fully booked through 2026, Western Digital can shift from a volume-driven model to one based on pricing power and product mix. Cloud and enterprise customers now account for roughly 89% of revenue, insulating the company from the historical volatility of the PC and consumer markets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Western Digital?

Technology is another pillar of optimism. The company's roadmap includes drives beyond 100 terabytes, leveraging HAMR and UltraSMR technology to widen the cost advantage over solid-state drives. Institutional investors have taken note: recent filings show significant position increases, with many viewing the pullback from the June high as an entry opportunity.

Bearish case: customer concentration and valuation risk

The biggest risk to the bullish narrative remains the extreme concentration among a handful of hyperscalers. The seven largest customers represent the bulk of firm orders. Should a major cloud provider — such as Meta or Microsoft — decide to trim its capital expenditure budget, the impact on Western Digital would be swift, regardless of existing contracts.

That worry is not merely theoretical. An analyst at Citigroup recently warned of a potential slowdown in AI spending by large cloud operators, questioning whether the enormous investments will deliver the returns shareholders expect. Meta has added to the unease by reportedly exploring the rental of excess AI compute capacity, despite planning capital outlays of up to $145 billion this year. If even one of the industry's biggest spenders has spare capacity, fears of overinvestment ripple through the sector.

Operationally, there are execution risks as well. The transition to HAMR technology is technically demanding, and any delays in qualification or ramp-up could allow rival Seagate to gain ground in the lucrative segment above 30 terabytes. Meanwhile, the stock's parabolic ascent — 791% in twelve months — has created a chart pattern that is acutely sensitive to profit-taking. As Thursday's rout demonstrated, Western Digital often moves in lockstep with the broader AI infrastructure theme, regardless of its own fundamentals.

Technical support and the next catalyst

Despite the steep correction from the June peak, the stock has found support near its 50-day moving average, currently around €468. The 50-day level held on Thursday, and Friday's bounce confirms that a zone between €500 and €550 remains in play. The consensus analyst price target of €515.58 is still within striking distance.

Western Digital at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next major catalyst will be the company's upcoming quarterly report. Investors will focus on how the raft of firm orders translates into free cash flow, a metric that has already improved markedly. If management can demonstrate that the hyperscaler demand is not only visible but also profitable, the current market capitalisation of about €180 billion could prove justified. If not, a retreat toward the 100-day moving average near €363 becomes a realistic scenario.

For now, Western Digital sits at the intersection of two powerful forces: a production pipeline that is spoken for years ahead and a market narrative that is increasingly questioning the sustainability of the AI spending cycle. The resolution of that tension will determine whether the stock's remarkable run has further to go.
