Vulcan Energy has entered a pivotal phase, with its share price punching through both its 100-day and 200-day moving averages in a single session — a technical breakout that coincides with the first physical signs of its long-awaited Lionheart lithium project taking shape.

The stock closed at A$3.83 on the ASX, marking a near-5% gain for the day, while the Frankfurt-listed shares rose to €2.38. The move comes as a sharp reversal from late March, when the stock was trading roughly 30% below its 200-day average. Trading volumes surged to around 3 million shares, roughly a million more than the prior session, with intraday swings between A$3.60 and A$3.95 pointing to heightened two-way activity.

Groundbreaking Marks the End of the Planning Phase

The catalyst is unmistakable. Vulcan has turned the first sod on its central lithium chemicals plant at Industriepark Höchst near Frankfurt, one of Europe’s largest chemical and energy hubs. The ceremony drew Hesse’s state premier Boris Rhein and Frankfurt’s mayor Mike Josef — underscoring the political weight behind a project that has held “strategic project” status under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act since March 2025.

The construction start puts a €2.2 billion financing package to work, a deal sealed in December 2025 with backing from 13 institutions including the European Investment Bank, BNP Paribas, ING and UniCredit. At the end of the last reporting period, Vulcan held €523.13 million in cash.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

Offtake Deals and Market Tailwinds

The commercial framework is already locked in. Glencore has committed to buying between 36,000 and 44,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide over eight years, while Stellantis, Umicore and LG Energy Solution have all signed long-term offtake agreements. The project is targeting an annual capacity of 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate — enough to supply roughly 500,000 electric vehicles per year.

The lithium market is providing a supportive backdrop. Battery-grade lithium carbonate was last quoted at $20,500 per tonne, with lithium hydroxide at $19,800 — both stable and edging higher week-on-week. Notably, the EU still has no operating lithium mine anywhere in the bloc.

The Numbers Behind the Story

Vulcan’s financials reflect its developer status. The company posted a net loss of €69.6 million for fiscal 2025 on operating revenue of €7.35 million. Its beta sits above 2.3, meaning the stock moves more than twice as violently as the broader market — typical for a company whose valuation rests almost entirely on future cash flows.

Vulcan Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What Comes Next

All eyes are now on Wednesday, 29 April, when Vulcan releases its March quarter report — the first update since construction began. The cash flow statement will be the centrepiece, offering the clearest picture yet of how quickly the company is burning through its war chest for Phase One of Lionheart. CEO Cris Moreno is scheduled to address shareholders at the annual general meeting in Perth on 28 May, where the production target of 2028 will face its first real scrutiny of the year.

The question hanging over the stock for the remainder of 2026 is whether the timeline and cost estimates survive contact with the construction site. Wednesday’s numbers will provide the first concrete answer.
