Volkswagen shareholders face a critical confluence of events this week, with new model launches, fresh government subsidies, and a key report from battery partner QuantumScape set against a backdrop of starkly divergent regional performance. The stock, trading at €91.94, finds itself roughly 13% down year-to-date and 15% below its December peak, with a Relative Strength Index of 71 hinting the recent rebound may be overextended.

The product offensive is in full swing. Volkswagen recently unveiled the ID.3 Neo, boasting a range of up to 630 km and a revamped cockpit, with pre-sales beginning on April 16 in Germany and other European markets. Its market launch is scheduled for July 2026. This flagship is joined by the upcoming ID. Cross, an entry-level SUV priced around €28,000 for a summer launch, and the ID. Polo, going on sale at the end of April. In total, the group plans over 20 new models for 2026, about half of which will be fully electric.

This product push, however, collides with a challenging global landscape. The company's worldwide deliveries for the first quarter of 2026 fell 4% year-on-year to just under 2.05 million vehicles, with electric vehicle (EV) declines even more pronounced. The regional split tells a story of two worlds. In Europe, order intake across all powertrains rose by 3%, with EV orders also increasing. Conversely, the picture in China and the US is bleak. Chinese EV deliveries collapsed by 64% as state subsidies expired and new local models were not yet available. In the US, heightened tariffs in effect since April 2025 contributed to an 80% plunge.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Volkswagen?

The pressure on EV pricing is intensifying globally. A recent UK market report indicates new electric cars there are now cheaper than comparable combustion-engine models for the first time, with an average EV price of £42,620 driven by average discounts of 11.7%. This trend is mirrored in the premium segment, where the Porsche Macan Electric saw global deliveries drop 43% in Q1 2026. At auction, a used model with a list price over $121,000 fetched only around $88,500.

Seeking to stimulate demand, the German government is reactivating purchase incentives. Starting in May 2026, a new federal program will subsidize pure electric cars with €3,000 and plug-in hybrids with €1,500, with a potential maximum of €6,000 under certain conditions. Buyers must commit to a minimum 36-month holding period and meet income limits. This is flanked by a €500 million charging infrastructure package, active since April 15, aimed at creating up to 300,000 new charging points, primarily in multi-family homes.

All eyes now turn to QuantumScape, in which Volkswagen holds a significant stake. The solid-state battery developer reports quarterly results on April 22, with its stock having already gained 11.6% in the prior week on speculation about concrete progress at its first production line, dubbed the Eagle Line. A successful demonstration of series-ready technology would hand Volkswagen a key differentiator against Chinese rivals like BYD or Geely, while failure would undermine a core pillar of its long-term EV strategy.

The immediate financial picture will come into sharper focus when Volkswagen releases its Q1 financial figures, expected later this month. Management has guided for a full-year operating margin between 4.0% and 5.5%, with stable to slightly rising revenue. Whether the severe China downturn and US tariff impact have already breached that framework will soon be clear. This week’s mix of product news, policy support, and partner updates will test whether the company's strategic initiatives can outweigh its acute market pressures.
