The Austrian steel and technology group Voestalpine is currently demonstrating remarkable strength on the stock exchange. Its shares have more than doubled in value over the past twelve months, a surge driven by a fundamental reassessment of the company's prospects. This upward momentum is not built on market speculation but on concrete operational results: a successful restructuring and significantly improved profitability, even amid declining revenues.

Financial Discipline Takes Center Stage

The equity recently reached a new 52-week high of €49.10, and while it has seen a slight consolidation to €48.62, the technical chart outlook remains decidedly positive. This investor confidence stems directly from the latest nine-month figures. Voestalpine has deliberately pursued a strategy of portfolio optimization, including the sale of divisions like Buderus Edelstahl, which contributed to a 5.1% revenue decline to €11.1 billion. However, the company's earnings power has strengthened substantially.

Operating profit (EBITDA) advanced by 7.2% to over €1.03 billion, and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) saw an even more impressive jump of over 20%. This performance validates the management's clear "margin over volume" approach. Notably, the Steel Division managed to offset weaker pricing through higher sales volumes and reduced raw material costs.

Balance Sheet Strength and Strategic Focus

Beyond operational metrics, the market is rewarding the firm's financial discipline. Net debt was slashed by approximately 27% year-over-year to €1.4 billion. This robust financial position provides crucial flexibility for the company's major "greentec steel" project, its ambitious transformation toward low-CO? steel production.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?

The strategic refocusing continues. Following the announced sale of subsidiary Böhler Profil at the end of January, Voestalpine is further concentrating on technologically demanding, high-performance market segments. These efficiency measures are also reflected in workforce adjustments, with the number of full-time positions reduced by nearly four percent.

Confirmed Outlook and Key Dates

Company leadership has reaffirmed its guidance for the current fiscal year, projecting an EBITDA in the range of €1.4 billion to €1.55 billion. With the global economy largely adjusted to new macroeconomic conditions, positive demand drivers from sectors like railway infrastructure and aerospace are expected to persist. Investors' next major milestone will be June 3, when the group is scheduled to release its detailed annual report.
