The Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine is navigating a complex landscape where a landmark aerospace contract and a costly furnace repair highlight the dual nature of its modern transformation. While a new €1 billion deal with Airbus promises to reshape its revenue streams, an unplanned maintenance shutdown at its Linz plant served as a stark reminder of ongoing operational challenges.

This strategic pivot toward high-value aerospace components is particularly timely. The company's traditional steel business continues to feel the pressure from punitive US import tariffs, which are expected to dent earnings by €60 to €80 million this fiscal year. Specific duties on speciality tubes can reach up to 50 percent. The Airbus agreement, spanning five years and covering materials for aircraft families like the A320 and A350, provides a crucial buffer. Production for this historic order will be handled at sites in Kapfenberg, Mürzzuschlag, and by the Brazilian subsidiary Villares Metals.

Financially, the group's foundation appears solid. For the first three quarters of the current fiscal year, Voestalpine reported a 7.2 percent rise in EBITDA to €1 billion. EBIT jumped 20.9 percent to €473 million on revenue of €11.1 billion. Notably, net debt fell 27.4 percent to €1.4 billion despite ongoing major investments. Management has reaffirmed its full-year EBITDA guidance of €1.4 to €1.55 billion.

On the regulatory front, European policies are creating a tailwind that contrasts sharply with US trade barriers. The fully implemented Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) now adds €40 to €70 per tonne to steel imports from third countries. This mechanism is set to tighten further from July 2026, when EU quotas halve and external tariffs rise to 50 percent. For Voestalpine, its early decarbonization push is turning into a significant structural advantage.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?

The heart of this green transition is a €1.5 billion investment in two electric arc furnaces in Linz and Donawitz, aimed at cutting CO? emissions by 30 percent by 2029. The construction phase for the Linz plant concludes this April, with the first furnace scheduled to begin operations in February 2027. This effort is complemented by the Hy4Smelt project, a €170 million industrial demonstration plant for hydrogen-based direct reduction in Linz, slated to start by the end of 2027.

Simultaneously, the company has streamlined its portfolio. The sale of BÖHLER Profil to US firm Kadant generated approximately €157 million. This move, alongside the divestment of Buderus Edelstahl and other site optimizations, has completed the restructuring of the High Performance Metals Division.

Investor sentiment has been volatile. The share price retreated 3.46 percent to €41.24 following news of the unplanned blast furnace maintenance, details of which remain undisclosed. This pullback leaves the stock roughly 15 percent below its February peak of €49.10. Despite the recent dip, the equity has still gained an impressive 87 percent over a twelve-month horizon and continues to trade comfortably above its 200-day moving average.

Voestalpine at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes are now on June 3, when Voestalpine will publish its complete annual results for the 2025/26 fiscal year. This report will reveal the full impact of the US tariffs on fourth-quarter margins and indicate whether the operational cushion built in the first nine months was sufficient. The ordinary annual general meeting is scheduled to follow on July 1.
