Voestalpine's Green Steel Transition Reaches Critical Construction Phase

Austria's Voestalpine advances its €1.5B decarbonization plan, building a new electric arc furnace. Strong financials and EU carbon tariffs provide tailwinds, despite US trade headwinds.

The Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine is progressing on schedule with its landmark corporate transformation. A pivotal moment in its €1.5 billion decarbonization initiative will be reached in April with the completion of the structural shell for a new electric arc furnace facility in Linz. This advancement is strategically timed, coinciding with new European regulations that now provide a tangible market edge to producers with lower emissions.

Financial Resilience Amidst Strategic Shifts

Voestalpine enters this capital-intensive phase from a position of financial strength. Results for the first three quarters of the previous fiscal year (April to December 2025) demonstrate robust operational health, even as revenue saw a slight dip to €11.1 billion. Key financial metrics showed positive trends:

  • EBITDA: €1.0 billion (a 7.2 percent increase)
  • EBIT: €473 million (up 20.9 percent)
  • Pre-tax profit: Rose by 46.5 percent
  • Net debt: €1.4 billion (a reduction of 27.4 percent)

The group is set to release its full-year figures on June 3, 2026. With significantly lowered debt and construction milestones being met, the company has established a stable foundation to manage the forthcoming operational ramp-up of its new plants starting in 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Voestalpine?

Regulatory Tailwinds and Headwinds

The timing of Voestalpine's large-scale project is proving advantageous. Since January 2026, the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has been fully implemented. This policy requires importers from third countries, such as China or Turkey, to purchase CO? certificates, increasing the cost of imported steel by €40 to €70 per ton. As Voestalpine advances its own decarbonization, it stands to benefit more from this protective market measure.

Conversely, the company is contending with trade pressures from the United States. Tariffs on steel and aluminum imports there are projected to cost a mid-double-digit million euro amount in the current business year. These geopolitical friction points have recently influenced the stock's performance. Over the past 30 trading days, Voestalpine shares declined approximately 15 percent, closing yesterday at €38.62.

Detailed Timeline for Green Steel Production

The project in Linz remains on track. Following the April completion of the building's shell, the first of two planned electric arc furnaces (EAF) is scheduled to commence operations in February 2027. A second furnace will follow at the company's Donawitz site. This represents a massive investment aimed at progressively replacing traditional blast furnaces.

The company's target is to reduce its CO? emissions by 30 percent by 2029, equating to an annual saving of nearly four million tons. In parallel, Voestalpine is establishing the necessary supply chains for raw materials, as the initial furnace alone will require roughly 450,000 tons of new input material each year.
