KNDS's RCH 155 howitzer, tested in Ukraine, is a frontrunner for a US Army contract. A win would boost its €20B valuation ahead of its planned stock market debut.

A pivotal opportunity is emerging for the Franco-German defense conglomerate KNDS as it approaches its planned stock market debut. The United States Army is accelerating the modernization of its artillery capabilities, with an official tender for a new wheeled howitzer system scheduled for release before the end of this month. Securing this contract for its RCH 155 model would provide substantial validation for KNDS’s targeted €20 billion valuation ahead of its imminent initial public offering.

A Strategic Transatlantic Partnership

In response to the realities of contemporary combat, the U.S. military is moving swiftly to replace its towed M777 howitzers. Unarmored artillery systems have proven too vulnerable to counter-battery fire. The new requirement calls for heavily armored, highly mobile wheeled vehicles capable of a "shoot-and-scoot" maneuver—firing and immediately relocating. For this competition, KNDS has entered its RCH 155 system through an alliance with its American partner, Leonardo DRS.

This transatlantic team holds a significant advantage: their offering is not merely a prototype. Currently, 54 units are being operationally tested under extreme conditions in Ukraine. Furthermore, the United Kingdom placed an order this very month for 37 of these weapon systems in a deal worth £53 million. This international momentum and proven track record substantially strengthen the consortium's negotiating position in Washington. An additional logistical benefit is the existing German procurement framework, which guarantees allied nations fixed terms through government-to-government agreements.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying KNDS?

Operational Efficiency as a Decisive Edge

A review of performance specifications clarifies why the KNDS offering is considered a frontrunner. The technological leap becomes evident when compared to the current U.S. standard, the M109 Paladin. To complete a fire mission of 216 rounds, a battery of 24 Paladin howitzers manned by 144 personnel requires over 180 seconds. The RCH 155 system accomplishes the identical task using just 12 vehicles and 24 soldiers in 140 seconds.

This enhanced capability is driven by a fully automated loading mechanism, enabling a rate of fire of nine rounds per minute. The dramatic reduction in required personnel, coupled with superior firepower, aligns precisely with the U.S. Army's requirements. This focus on protected mobility has already led to the exclusion of lighter systems, such as the French CAESAR howitzer, due to their lower survivability.

Synchronized Timelines: Contract Award and IPO

The U.S. Army's procurement schedule is tightly calibrated. Following the final request for proposals in late March, the plan is to acquire between six and twelve prototypes for testing in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. Washington is targeting a final contract award for up to 500 systems by July 2026.

This timeline dovetails exactly with the capital market plans of KNDS. Chief Executive Jean-Paul Alary is targeting a dual listing on the Paris and Frankfurt exchanges for June or July, with approximately 25 percent of the company's equity to be floated. The firm's fundamental standing is already solid, supported by an order backlog of €23.5 billion as of 2024. A major U.S. contract award in the summer would add an entirely new dimension to this pipeline, powerfully reinforcing the investment narrative right at the launch of public trading.
