In response to severe weather damage, UniCredit has launched a support initiative for businesses and private individuals in Italy's Molise and Abruzzen regions. The pan-European banking group is offering a twelve-month payment deferral on mortgage and unsecured loan instalments to qualifying customers. Applications for this relief must be submitted by May 15, 2026.

Record Profits Underpin Strong Capital Position

The bank’s capacity to provide such regional assistance is backed by a robust financial performance. For the full year 2025, UniCredit reported a net profit of €10.6 billion. Chief Executive Andrea Orcel characterized this figure, which marks an approximate 14 percent increase over the prior year, as a record. Furthermore, the firm’s year-end CET1 ratio—a key measure of financial resilience—stood at 14.7 percent. This comfortably exceeded the bank’s own target range of 12.5 to 13 percent.

Substantial Shareholder Returns Continue Unabated

UniCredit’s 2025 results also facilitated significant capital returns to its shareholders, totaling €9.5 billion. This sum was distributed through two primary channels: €4.75 billion was paid out as cash dividends, with the remaining balance delivered via share buybacks. Against this backdrop of substantial profit generation and distribution, the regional support measure represents a relatively minor commitment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Unicredit?

The loan moratorium for Molise and Abruzzen, while a focused and localized action, exemplifies UniCredit’s strategic approach as a financial institution with deep local roots across Europe. It serves as a practical demonstration of how the bank balances its large-scale financial objectives with a commitment to supporting the communities it serves.
