Ubtech Robotics finds itself in an unusual position: two distinct growth engines are firing on all cylinders, yet the market is punishing the stock. The Chinese humanoid-robot specialist this week signed a high?value partnership to supply power?grid operators with autonomous maintenance units, while pre?orders for its new consumer companion robot have climbed well past 13,000. Nonetheless, the share price fell sharply as a sector?wide rout swept through Chinese robotics names.

The grid?facing venture, struck in Shenzhen with partner Shenhao Technology, targets the country’s sprawling electricity infrastructure. State?owned grid operators plan to acquire around 8,500 advanced devices by year?end — equipment designed to autonomously navigate substations, measure temperatures and detect faults in high?voltage environments. The total investment tied to that plan amounts to roughly €860 million, and analysts estimate the broader artificial?intelligence spend across China’s power network could exceed ¥10 billion. Ubtech and Shenhao have set up a dedicated lab to develop the hardware and software needed for the deployment.

On the consumer front, demand for the Uworld U1 series has exceeded initial projections. More than 13,300 pre?orders have been placed, building on an earlier tally of 3,800 bookings during the first ten days of presale. The ultra?realistic companion robot, equipped with 88 servo joints, is priced steeply: the entry model starts at around ¥120,000, while the flagship U1 Ultra costs close to ¥1 million. Ubtech is targeting affluent customers aged 35 to 50, with an integrated language model that claims over 90% accuracy in detecting human emotions. One noted drawback is the limited battery life, which the company defends as in line with industry norms for humanoid systems.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ubtech Robotics?

The push into private homes has drawn regulatory attention. On July 5, 2026, an industry consortium published initial ethics guidelines for companion robots, with data privacy as the central pillar — all user data must remain local and encrypted. Ubtech responded by forming an internal ethics council and has stressed that its robots are meant to complement, not replace, human relationships.

Financially, the company enters this new phase on a solid footing. Revenues surged 53% to just over ¥2 billion in the most recent fiscal year, with 1,079 humanoid robots shipped to industrial customers. Gross margin improved to 37.7%. Despite a net loss of ¥790 million, Ubtech holds nearly ¥5 billion in cash — ample firepower for expansion. The competitive landscape is intensifying: rival Unitree Robotics is preparing an IPO that would raise ¥4.2 billion, and currently leads in global shipment volumes. Ubtech is responding by targeting the premium consumer niche, planning to scale production capacity to 50,000 units per year by 2027.

None of that shielded the stock from Wednesday’s sell?off. Ubtech shares closed at €9.94, down 6.74% on the day and edging closer to the year’s low of €9.42. The year?to?date decline now exceeds 31%, and annualised volatility remains elevated at roughly 87%. Analysts at Citi, however, maintain a buy rating with price targets ranging from HK$155 to HK$190, betting that the operator?alliance and the consumer?robot gamble will eventually translate into meaningful revenue.
