The Chinese robotics firm Ubtech Robotics is deploying its humanoid robots from factory floors to agricultural settings, signaling a strategic expansion. However, despite strong financials and new high-profile partnerships, the current limitations of its technology are tempering investor enthusiasm for its shares.

Financial Foundation and Aggressive Hiring

Ubtech enters this expansion phase from a position of financial strength, according to its 2025 results. The company holds cash reserves of approximately 4.92 billion yuan. Its operational performance showed significant improvement:

  • Revenue surged by 53% to 2 billion yuan.
  • The net loss narrowed by 32% to 789.8 million yuan.
  • Gross margin expanded from 29% to 38%.
  • Unit sales of humanoid robots reached 1,079, a dramatic increase from just 3 units the previous year.

Leveraging this solid base, Ubtech is pursuing an aggressive talent acquisition strategy to compete in the global AI race. The company is seeking a Chief Scientist for "Embodied Intelligence," offering an annual salary of up to 18 million US dollars—a figure considered exceptionally high even within the competitive Chinese tech market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ubtech Robotics?

Strategic Diversification into New Sectors

The company is actively diversifying the applications for its flagship Walker model. A new collaboration with Malaysian agricultural technology company Agroz aims to deploy humanoid robots for seeding, monitoring, and harvesting in vertical farms. Real-world field deployment is scheduled for 2026. Agroz anticipates this will enable continuous 24/7 operations, freeing human workers for more complex tasks.

Concurrently, Ubtech is advancing its industrial diversification. Beyond existing deployments in factories for automakers like BYD and Apple supplier Foxconn, aerospace giant Airbus is now testing the latest Walker S2 model. Airbus has clarified that the collaboration remains in an early conceptual phase, with broader industrial use not yet confirmed.

The Productivity Gap and Market Sentiment

Despite these ambitious plans and a partnership with Siemens to scale annual production capacity to 10,000 units, Ubtech's stock has faced pressure. Since reaching a year-to-date high of 156.40 Hong Kong dollars in February, the share price has retreated significantly.

A primary reason for investor caution appears to be the current state of the technology. In January, Ubtech acknowledged that its newest Walker S2 models operate at a maximum of half the efficiency of human labor, confirming the technology is still in an early prototype stage. The company's roadmap aims to boost robotic performance to 80% of human productivity by 2027, highlighting the considerable gap that must still be closed.
