The successful transit of two cruise ships through the Strait of Hormus on April 18th has ended a costly logistical blockade for TUI. The Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5 are now en route to the Mediterranean, freeing the company from a month-long ordeal that saw the vessels idled in ports at Doha and Abu Dhabi. While the operational breakthrough removes an immediate crisis, it initiates a race against time to salvage the core summer season.

Passengers were repatriated to Germany in March, leaving only a skeleton crew aboard. The ships are now taking the long way home, bypassing the Red Sea entirely for a route around the Cape of Good Hope. A scheduled stop in Cape Town at the end of April will allow for refueling, reprovisioning, and a crew change. From there, the vessels will proceed to Malta before positioning for their summer itineraries.

TUI Cruises has announced tight restart dates, reactivating bookings automatically after previous cancellations. The Mein Schiff 5 is slated to welcome guests again in Heraklion, Crete, on May 15, with the Mein Schiff 4 following in Triest on May 17. Meeting this schedule requires sustained high-speed sailing and timely crew preparation, leaving minimal room for error. Numerous departures through early May have already been scrapped.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TUI?

The geopolitical tensions have forced a strategic retreat from the wider region. TUI has completely withdrawn the Mein Schiff Flow from its planned Orient season, cancelling all voyages scheduled between October 2026 and May 2027. Affected guests are being offered rebooking options.

This operational drama unfolds against a backdrop of robust financial health, at least on paper. The travel giant recently reported a record first-quarter adjusted EBIT of approximately €77 million on revenue nearing €5 billion. Management continues to stand by its full-year guidance, targeting revenue growth of two to four percent and an adjusted EBIT increase of seven to ten percent. This forecast hinges on a normalization of booking patterns in the second quarter, even as summer bookings have recently lagged slightly behind the previous year's pace.

Investors have struggled to reconcile strong fundamentals with the stock's performance. Shares have declined roughly 15% since the start of the year. News of the fleet's escape provided a lift, pushing the stock up over five percent on Friday to €7.55. Despite this recovery from a low around €6.40, the price remains nearly 20% below its yearly high above €9.40.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank and Barclays maintain a €12 price target, citing operational leverage and an expected recovery in travel volume and pricing this summer. The upcoming half-year report in May will be a critical test, requiring TUI to quantify costs from cancellations and weaker bookings. If management reaffirms its annual outlook despite the significant operational disruptions, it could provide the catalyst for shares to challenge the 200-day moving average around €8. The coming weeks will determine if a smooth seasonal restart can convert operational momentum into sustained investor confidence.
