Geopolitical conflict halts TUI's Gulf cruises, stranding 5,000 passengers. Analysts estimate €50M revenue loss, with ships to reroute via South Africa. CEO notes booking shift to Caribbean.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are delivering a substantial blow to TUI's cruise operations, with two of its vessels stranded and a direct hit to its financial performance anticipated. The travel giant is navigating immediate evacuation logistics while analysts begin to quantify the mounting costs.

Immediate Operational Halt and Evacuation Efforts

Military clashes in the region have led to the closure of key airspace and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, effectively paralyzing cruise activities in the Persian Gulf. The ships "Mein Schiff 4" and "Mein Schiff 5," carrying approximately 5,000 passengers combined, are currently immobilized in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively.

TUI Cruises initiated a complex repatriation operation in early March. So far, it has managed to fly home around 2,140 guests from the "Mein Schiff 4" via Dubai and Muscat. The evacuation from the "Mein Schiff 5" in Doha is proving more challenging due to ongoing airspace restrictions over the UAE and Qatar.

All departures scheduled up to and including March 16th for the "Mein Schiff 4" and March 12th for the "Mein Schiff 5" have been canceled. For the summer season, the company is planning an alternative route to return both ships to Europe via South Africa, deeming the passage through the Red Sea and Suez Canal as currently too risky.

Financial Impact Estimates Begin to Surface

Market researchers are already modeling the financial consequences. According to mwb research, the revenue loss is estimated at approximately €50 million, with a corresponding decline in EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of around €25 million. This projection assumes the operational disruptions are confined to March.

An additional cost of €22 million could be incurred if TUI proceeds with the longer 25-day return journey around the Cape of Good Hope. This route would significantly increase fuel expenses and create extra logistical complexities.

Despite the current crisis, TUI's medium-term group targets for 2026—aiming for revenue growth of 2-4% and EBIT growth of 7-10%—are still considered achievable, provided the situation normalizes by April.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TUI?

Booking Trends Shift as Management Responds

In comments to ntv, TUI CEO Sebastian Ebel confirmed that travelers are already shifting their bookings to alternative destinations like the Caribbean. He anticipates a temporary downturn in demand for the Gulf region, noting that a recovery in bookings "could take several months."

The primary risk remains a potential escalation or geographical spread of the conflict. Should perceptions of regional instability grow, key summer destinations for TUI such as Turkey (accounting for roughly 20% of summer bookings) and Egypt (about 5%) could also face pressure.

Notably, both CEO Sebastian Ebel and CFO Mathias Kiep have taken advantage of recent share price weakness to make personal purchases of TUI stock.

Long-Term Growth Strategy Continues Unabated

Even while managing this acute situation, TUI is pushing forward with its expansion plans. The "TUI Blue Yangtze Shanghai" is scheduled to open in June 2026, followed by the new "Robinson Boa Vista" resort in Cape Verde in March 2027. Globally, the company has over 70 additional hotel projects in its development pipeline.

Investors will be watching closely for the half-year report due on May 13th. The interim period will be critical in determining whether stability returns to the Middle East or if TUI's crisis management protocols must remain in place for several more weeks.
