TSMC Unveils Aggressive Expansion to Meet Surging Chip Demand
23.02.2026 - 16:30:41 | boerse-global.deTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is launching a monumental capacity expansion, driven by relentless global demand for cutting-edge semiconductors, particularly those powering artificial intelligence applications. The company’s blueprint involves up to ten new fabrication facilities either under construction or slated to begin construction in Taiwan by 2026.
Strategic Focus on Next-Generation Nodes
The construction push is strategically distributed across northern, central, and southern Taiwan. A core element is the development of facilities dedicated to its 2-nanometer (nm) technology. The Fab 20 plant in Hsinchu's Baoshan district, situated adjacent to TSMC’s global R&D center, is already operational. It is projected to reach a production capacity of 20,000 to 25,000 wafers per month.
Simultaneously, the company is establishing Fab 22 in Kaohsiung, which will also be exclusively devoted to 2nm chip manufacturing. Looking further ahead, TSMC is laying the groundwork for its 1.4-nm process. The Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung has been selected as the primary site for this future node, with plans for four distinct manufacturing units at the designated Fab 25 location. Industry observer TrendForce notes that preparatory work commenced in late 2025, with risk production scheduled for late 2027 and volume production expected in the second half of 2028.
Bolstering Advanced Packaging Capabilities
Beyond front-end wafer fabrication, TSMC is significantly scaling its advanced packaging operations, a critical backend process. The Central Taiwan Science Park is emerging as a hub for this segment as well. Two key facilities—AP5B in Taichung and AP7 P1 in Chiayi—are both targeted for completion in 2026, enhancing the company’s ability to offer integrated solutions.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?
This comprehensive capacity offensive is a direct response to exploding requirements from the AI sector, where major technology firms require increasing volumes of high-performance chips for data centers and machine learning initiatives. In parallel with its domestic expansion, TSMC is reportedly considering additional investments at its Arizona sites to strengthen chip manufacturing capabilities within the United States.
