Any entity aiming to construct the backbone of global artificial intelligence infrastructure must inevitably engage with a single, dominant player. Recent industry data underscores the vast gap that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has opened over its competitors. As rivals, including Samsung, grapple with production yields on their most advanced manufacturing nodes, the market leader exercises near-total control over the supply of high-performance computing chips.

Financial Performance Reflects Market Dominance

The company's operational supremacy is clearly visible in its latest financial results. For the year 2025, TSMC reported a substantial 51 percent surge in profit. This growth is primarily fueled by its formidable pricing power in the market for cutting-edge semiconductors. On the equity markets, the stock has demonstrated resilience following a recent period of consolidation. Closing yesterday at 296.50 euros, the share price sits approximately ten percent below its 52-week peak, which was recorded in February. Nevertheless, investors are looking at an impressive twelve-month gain of about 86 percent.

Long-term contracts with the world's major cloud service providers ensure a high degree of visibility for future revenue. As long as the global expansion of data centers continues at its current rapid pace, the chip giant's order books are expected to remain full.

A Commanding Share of the Foundry Market

A report published Wednesday by Counterpoint Research provides a stark illustration of the industry's competitive landscape. Within the pure-play foundry segment, TSMC commands a staggering 72 percent market share. The insatiable demand for AI graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerators is the primary engine behind this trend, driving the entire sector to grow by 20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The distance to its closest followers is immense. Samsung occupies a distant second place with a mere 7 percent share. The Chinese competitor SMIC follows with 5.3 percent. While SMIC recently posted record revenues, bolstered by solid domestic demand, the technological gulf separating it from the industry leader remains firmly in place.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TSMC?

Near-Total Control of Advanced Node Production

The dependence of major technology firms on TSMC becomes particularly pronounced for the most sophisticated manufacturing processes. For nodes at 3 nanometers and below, the Taiwanese company's market share exceeds 90 percent. Demand for these specific processors, essential for modern data centers, continues to significantly outstrip available production capacity.

Advanced packaging represents another critical growth driver. TSMC's proprietary CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate) technology is in urgent demand for assembling complex, high-performance chips. Furthermore, the production of base chips for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is evolving into a crucial revenue stream. Leading chip designers are increasingly turning to TSMC to manufacture these highly specialized components.
