Tompkins Financial has reported a strong finish to its 2025 fiscal year, with shareholders set to benefit from a significant increase in the quarterly payout. The company's fourth-quarter performance was shaped by a strategic balance sheet overhaul, raising questions about the long-term impact on its profitability.

  • Quarterly Dividend: Increased by 8.1% to $0.67 per share.
  • GAAP Earnings Per Share: Rose to $6.70 for Q4.
  • Net Interest Margin: Improved to 3.42%.
  • Core Growth: Both loan and deposit volumes expanded by over 7%.

A major contributor to the robust fourth-quarter figures was the sale of the insurance subsidiary, TIA. This transaction generated approximately $223 million in proceeds and resulted in a pre-tax gain of $188.2 million. Management leveraged this capital influx to execute a comprehensive repositioning of the balance sheet.

As part of this effort, the firm sold $564.2 million in low-yielding securities, recognizing a pre-tax loss of $78.7 million. The strategic objective was to enhance the net interest margin by divesting underperforming assets.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tompkins?

Margin Improvement and Operational Performance

The effects of this restructuring were evident by the close of the period. The net interest margin climbed to 3.42% in Q4, up from 3.20% in the preceding quarter and 2.93% in the same period a year earlier. Excluding the one-time effects from the divestiture, the non-GAAP operating earnings per share for the quarter stood at $1.78.

The core banking business demonstrated steady growth. Total loans increased by 7.1% year-over-year as of December 31, 2025, while total deposits grew by 7.2%. For the full 2025 fiscal year, Tompkins Financial posted diluted earnings per share of $11.24, with net income reaching $161.1 million.

The fortified capital position from the subsidiary sale and the streamlined securities portfolio provide a foundation for upcoming quarters. Investors will gain further insight into how the reshaped balance sheet performs in the current interest rate environment when the company releases its first-quarter 2026 results on April 24, 2026.
