TKMS Rides Brazilian Frigate Handover Into a Summer of Billion-Dollar Decisions

Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has crossed a strategic milestone in South America, handing over the first Tamandaré-class frigate to the Brazilian navy in Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay. The ceremony on April 24 marked more than a delivery — it unlocked a fresh memorandum of understanding for four additional vessels, worth an estimated $2 billion, and reinforced the German shipbuilder's ambitions in surface combatants at a moment when its order book is already bulging past €20 billion.
The Tamandaré, built on the proven MEKO platform at Itajaí, represents the most advanced naval project Brazil has ever undertaken. TKMS and Embraer have now signed a letter of intent for a second batch of four ships, extending a partnership that could keep Brazilian yards busy for years. Investors took notice: the stock climbed to €86.30 on Thursday, pushing its year-to-date gain to nearly 25 percent.
Analysts have responded with upgraded targets. Deutsche Bank Research lifted its price objective from €99 to €110, maintaining a buy rating. Analyst Sriram Krishnan pointed to a clear inflection point in surface vessel construction by the end of the decade. MWB Research went further, setting a target of €125 and warning against reading too much into the upcoming half-year figures. The research house expects a first-half order intake of €2.2 billion, revenue of €1.15 billion, and an adjusted EBIT margin of 5.4 percent — a dip from the prior year that it attributes purely to base effects.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TKMS?
The company is currently in a quiet period ahead of its May 11 half-year report, when management will open the books. Market observers caution that any year-on-year weakness will reflect timing rather than operational trouble. The first quarter already delivered €545 million in revenue with a double-digit gross margin, prompting management to raise its full-year growth forecast to as much as 5 percent.
Beyond Brazil, two mega-projects loom. In Canada, TKMS is battling South Korea's Hanwha Ocean for a submarine program worth up to €37 billion, with Ottawa seeking Arctic-capable boats. On home turf, the F127 air-defense frigate program — valued at roughly €26 billion — faces a decisive vote on June 24, when the Bundestag's budget committee will rule on financing. TKMS is the sole remaining bidder, and approval would lock in capacity at its Kiel yard well into the 2030s.
The German navy's F-128 frigate project, approved by parliament as a bridge solution for delayed predecessor models, adds further momentum. TKMS secured early production slots with suppliers, with first delivery targeted for late 2029. That contract, combined with the Brazilian follow-on and the Canadian and German decisions ahead, positions the company for a summer that could reshape its long-term production profile.
