The German naval shipbuilder TKMS has secured a world-first classification approval for an autonomous underwater vehicle, yet investors are training their focus on the company's cash flow strain and fading share price. The Approval in Principle from DNV for the MUM demonstrator — an extra-large unmanned underwater vessel (XLUUV) — marks a technological breakthrough. It confirms the design meets class rules for autonomous systems, a critical step toward operational deployment. But on the trading floor, that accolade did little to buck the negative trend.

The stock ended Tuesday at €74.80, shedding more than 12% over the past seven days. That leaves it 26% below its 52-week high of €100.60, with the relative strength index at 32.4 — a technical signal that the shares are oversold. For all the strategic progress, the market is fixated on the numbers that matter in the short term.

First-half results for the 2025/26 fiscal year showed clear operational advance. Revenue climbed 10% to roughly €1.17 billion, while adjusted EBIT rose 14% to €60 million, pushing the adjusted margin to 5.1%. The marine electronics subsidiary Atlas Elektronik outperformed sharply, its adjusted EBIT surging 73% to €41 million on a margin of 10.9%. The group's order backlog hit a record €20.6 billion, up 13% from year-end, with order intake of €3.4 billion driven by additional submarine orders from Norway and the largest torpedo contract in company history. A book-to-bill ratio of 3.0 underlines the pipeline strength.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying TKMS?

Yet the free cash flow shortfall is causing concern. At minus €72 million, it compared with an extraordinary €756 million in the prior-year period. Management attributed the drop to scheduled outflows on ongoing projects and the absence of large advance payments. An additional one-off payment of €285 million to former parent Thyssenkrupp following the carve-out in October 2025 reduced the net financial position to €975 million. The business is growing but tying up capital in the process.

Management reaffirmed its upgraded full-year guidance: revenue growth of 2% to 5%, an adjusted EBIT margin above 6%, and a medium-term target of more than 7%. A dividend policy targeting a payout ratio of 30% to 50% of net profit is planned for 2027. Deutsche Bank analyst Sriram Krishnan maintained a Buy rating with a €110 price target, calling the half-year figures encouraging.

Beyond the financials, TKMS is actively positioning for future large tenders, including a potential Canadian submarine programme. Meanwhile, the MUM project — backed by Germany’s economics ministry and involving the University of Rostock, TU Berlin, DLR and Fraunhofer FKIE — is set to enter sea trials at the end of 2026, giving TKMS early exposure to a strategic defence segment. For now, the market wants to see margin expansion and a cash flow recovery in the second half before it fully rewards the underlying momentum.
