Tesla is aggressively expanding a crucial second pillar of its business as vehicle sales in its home market show signs of weakness. A newly confirmed multi-billion dollar agreement with LG Energy Solution underscores the growing significance of the company's energy division, signaling a strategic shift beyond electric vehicles toward comprehensive grid infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities.

A $4.3 Billion Bet on US Battery Independence

In a move approved by US authorities this Tuesday, the automaker has secured a major supply deal with South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution. Valued at $4.3 billion, the agreement guarantees Tesla a supply of prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells starting in 2027. These batteries will be produced at a retooled facility in Michigan and are designated exclusively for the Megapack 3 energy storage systems assembled in Houston, which are designed to stabilize power grids.

This strategic decision is driven by a dual objective. Establishing local manufacturing reduces Tesla's reliance on battery imports from China. Furthermore, it positions the company to fully capitalize on the attractive tax incentives available under the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Energy Storage Offsets Automotive Volatility

The financial importance of this segment is becoming increasingly clear. Tesla's energy division contributed $12.8 billion, accounting for 13% of total revenue last year. Company leadership now projects a roughly 50% increase in global storage installations for the current year.

This expansion is timely. US vehicle deliveries experienced a noticeable 26% decline in January. The stationary energy storage business is therefore acting as a critical buffer against fluctuations in the core automotive operations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tesla?

Vertical Integration Reaches Silicon

Alongside its battery initiative, Tesla is pushing forward with vertical integration in hardware. Construction is set to begin shortly in Texas on the "Terafab" project—a dedicated semiconductor fabrication plant with an estimated investment of up to $40 billion. The facility is slated to produce next-generation AI chips starting in mid-2028. This internal computing power is essential for realizing Tesla's ambitions in autonomous driving and its planned robotaxi fleet, while also circumventing potential future supply chain constraints.

Market Reaction and Forward Milestones

This fundamental corporate evolution is reflected in a mixed near-term performance for Tesla's stock. After a weak start to the year, shares are down approximately 7.5% since January, closing at €345.80 on Tuesday. However, looking back over the past twelve months, the equity still shows a substantial gain of over 67%.

Investor attention is now turning to upcoming operational milestones. The continued ramp-up of energy storage production and the imminent groundbreaking for the Texas chip factory are poised to be key focal points in the coming quarters.
