A pivotal week for Tesla saw its shares surge over 16% on a dual catalyst: a landmark regulatory approval in Europe and a significant advancement in its proprietary silicon. The electric vehicle maker closed the week at €341.20, pushing its stock just above the 200-day moving average, though it remains down 8.75% for the year.

The most consequential development was the Dutch vehicle authority RDW granting official approval for Tesla's Full Self-Driving Supervised system. This marks the first European regulatory green light for the technology after 18 months of testing and 1.6 million kilometers driven on EU roads. The approval for FSD version 2026.3.6 allows drivers in the Netherlands to take their hands off the wheel under suitable conditions, though they must remain attentive and ready to intervene. Subscriptions are priced at €99 per month or a one-time fee of €7,500.

This Dutch approval is far from a local event. Through mutual recognition, any other EU member state can adopt the certification without a full re-approval process. A broader EU-wide vote in the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles could follow as soon as May or June, potentially unlocking a vast new subscription market for Tesla. This directly impacts CEO Elon Musk's compensation package, one milestone of which requires ten million active FSD subscriptions. Europe's entry significantly accelerates the path from the one million subscriptions reported after Q4 2025.

Simultaneously, Tesla achieved a key hardware milestone. Elon Musk confirmed the tape-out of the next-generation AI5 chip, meaning its design is finalized and ready for production. The company is collaborating with Samsung and TSMC on the project. Musk noted that a single AI5 chip is expected to deliver roughly five times the computing power of the current dual AI4 setup, with integration into vehicles slated for 2027. He also mentioned that development on AI6 and Dojo3 is already underway.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tesla?

This technological momentum was complemented by a shift in analyst sentiment. UBS upgraded Tesla from "Sell" to "Neutral," raising its price target to $352. The broader analyst community, however, remains divided. An average of 48 analysts tracked by MarketScreener points to a $415 price target, with a wide range from $125 to $600. Barclays maintains a more cautious stance with a €360 target, highlighting investor focus on the potential costs of Tesla's planned Terafab gigafactory.

All eyes now turn to Tesla's first-quarter earnings report after the market closes on Wednesday, April 22. The operational backdrop is mixed. Vehicle deliveries of 358,023 units fell short of consensus estimates, which ranged from 365,000 to 370,000. Production, however, ran much hotter at over 408,000 vehicles, indicating a build-up of more than 50,000 units in inventory. On a brighter note, Tesla's energy storage deployments hit 8.8 GWh for the quarter.

Financial expectations are set for an adjusted earnings per share of approximately $0.38 on revenue of about $22.3 billion, a sharp increase from the $0.12 EPS reported in the year-ago period. Prediction markets currently assign a 53% probability that Tesla will miss or only meet profit expectations.

Tesla at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Beyond the numbers, investors will scrutinize updates on Tesla's autonomous future. Sightings at Giga Texas of roughly 14 Cybercab units without steering wheels, pedals, or side mirrors suggest the robotaxi program is moving from prototype to pre-production. The planned expansion of the robotaxi service to Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix in the first half of 2026 will be a key focus. The company's commentary on the rollout timeline and the financial implications of its Terafab and AI chip ambitions will likely define the market's reaction to the quarterly results.
