Tesla shares surged more than 16% last week, closing at 341.20 EUR on Friday and trimming the stock's year-to-date loss to just under nine percent. This rally, however, masks a stark operational reality and a looming financial challenge that will dominate the company's critical first-quarter earnings report this Wednesday, April 22.

The recent momentum stems from a series of strategic announcements. CEO Elon Musk confirmed over the weekend that Tesla is expanding its driverless robotaxi service from its Austin launch zone into Dallas and Houston. Early analysis of service maps indicates the Houston zone covers approximately 25 square miles, with Dallas operations focused around the Highland Park area. This push into autonomous ride-hailing, a market some estimate could reach $168 billion by 2035, is a core pillar of Tesla's transformation into an AI and robotics company.

A separate technological milestone further fueled investor optimism. In mid-April, Musk announced the successful "tape-out" of Tesla's next-generation AI5 chip, with the final design now sent to manufacturing partners. Industry reports suggest TSMC will handle production, while Samsung's lines are reserved for a subsequent model. This chip is destined for Tesla's supercomputing ambitions and its Optimus robot project.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Tesla?

Beneath these advances lies a colossal, and costly, undertaking. The true test for investors may not be this week's earnings per share, where the consensus expects $0.33 on revenue surpassing $21 billion, but rather the clarity Musk provides on financing his grandest vision.

In March, Tesla and SpaceX unveiled the "Terafab" project in Texas, a planned one-terawatt computing facility with a staggering price tag of $25 billion. Intel later joined as a partner for chip manufacturing and packaging. Crucially, this enormous expense is not included in Tesla's already-record investment budget for 2026, which exceeds $20 billion earmarked for factories, AI infrastructure, and new production lines. Analysts at Barclays identify the unresolved funding for Terafab as the central question that could shape Tesla's capital structure for years, presenting a significant uncovered cost risk.

This financial uncertainty contrasts sharply with recent operational struggles. Preliminary data for the first quarter revealed Tesla built over 50,000 more vehicles than it delivered to customers, significantly missing Wall Street's expectations. Concurrently, sales of energy storage products collapsed compared to the previous quarter.

The stock's high relative strength index (RSI) reading of 69.5 indicates strong bullish momentum. Yet, the wide dispersion of price targets across Wall Street reflects deep divisions over how to value a company straddling the line between automaker and AI pioneer. The sustainability of the recent rally hinges entirely on management's commentary this Wednesday. Investors will demand concrete timelines for the broader robotaxi rollout, updates on Autopilot software adoption rates, and, most pressingly, a credible plan for the Terafab billions. Without solid answers, the market's AI-fueled fantasy could face a severe reality check.
