Technical Warning Signs Precede MSCI World ETF's Steep Drop Below $200

The iShares MSCI World ETF fell below $200 after RSI hit 94.6 and oil prices surged, but remains up 9.2% YTD. Nvidia earnings and Fed minutes ahead.

The iShares MSCI World ETF had been flashing red well before Friday’s sell-off. Its relative strength index had surged to 94.6—a level that normally signals an imminent correction—and the fund had pierced its upper Bollinger Band, a technical pattern that often precedes a pullback. The reckoning came swiftly: the ETF closed at $199.92, down 1.39% and below the psychologically important $200 mark for the first time in days.

Oil shock and rising yields pile on pressure

The technical overstretch coincided with a fresh jolt from commodity markets. Brent crude vaulted above $109 a barrel on reports of failed Middle East diplomacy, reigniting inflation fears. That sent the yield on 10-year US Treasuries toward 4.6%, a move that typically punishes high-growth stocks—and the MSCI World is heavily tilted toward precisely those names. The US alone accounts for over 70% of the fund, with the technology sector making up about 26% of its portfolio.

Nvidia’s heavy weight amplifies the damage

As the largest single position in the ETF, Nvidia’s 4%+ decline on Friday was always going to leave a mark. Estimates of its weight vary: one analysis puts it at over 6%, another at around 5.6%. Either way, the chipmaker’s slide—driven by profit-taking after a prolonged rally and renewed concerns over China export restrictions—dragged down the entire fund. Amazon, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms also closed in the red. The MSCI World Index lost 1.35% on the day.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?

Despite the setback, the longer-term picture remains intact

Zooming out, the ETF has gained roughly 3.4% over the past 30 days and is up about 9.2% year-to-date. It sits nearly 31% above its 52-week low of $152.70, set in late March. The 10-day moving average still holds above the 50-day moving average, a configuration that historically points to further upside—provided the RSI can cool off. The fund had notched a fresh annual high of $202.74 just one day before the sell-off.

Three catalysts take centre stage this week

Investors now face a packed calendar. On 20 May, Nvidia reports quarterly earnings; the market will scrutinise whether demand for AI chips and data-centre capacity is accelerating fast enough to justify elevated valuations. A day later, the Federal Reserve releases the minutes from its latest policy meeting, alongside April housing-start data that could offer fresh clues about the US economy.

Then, on 29 May, the MSCI World undergoes its semi-annual rebalancing. New additions such as Medline A, MasTec, and TechnipFMC will enter the index, forcing automatic portfolio adjustments by the fund. While largely a technical event, the rebalancing can create short-term volatility.

Where the fund goes from here

Crucially, the ETF’s next move may depend on whether the current sell-off deepens to retest the middle Bollinger Band or finds support near $200. A rotation into financials and industrials—sectors that benefit from higher rates and oil prices—could cushion further tech-led losses. Meanwhile, economic data from the eurozone and Japan, which together represent roughly 30% of the non-US weight, will also influence sentiment. With developed-economy growth projected at 2.8% for 2026, the macro backdrop remains supportive, but the market may need to vent some steam first.
