In a significant strategic pivot, Take-Two Interactive Software has disbanded its in-house artificial intelligence research division. This move represents a notable reversal from the company's previous public stance, as CEO Strauss Zelnick had highlighted hundreds of active AI pilot projects as recently as February 2026.

A Seven-Year Initiative Ends

The now-shuttered department had been operational for seven years, focusing primarily on developing internal workflow tools and procedural content technology. A substantial portion of the team originally joined Take-Two following its $12.7 billion acquisition of mobile gaming giant Zynga in 2022. With the unit's dissolution, AI lead Luke Dicken is also departing from the company.

Management has cited "shifting priorities" as the rationale behind the decision. Zelnick has recently expressed public skepticism regarding AI's capability to deliver top-tier creative work. While certain niche applications, such as automated bug-testing, will reportedly continue, a centralized AI research function is no longer part of Take-Two's long-term strategic plan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Take-Two?

This direction sets the publisher apart from several key competitors. Firms including Electronic Arts, Square Enix, and Krafton have been expanding their investments in artificial intelligence, aiming to reduce development costs and accelerate production cycles.

Financial Health and the GTA VI Focus

Take-Two's financial position remains robust. For its third fiscal quarter ending December 31, 2025, the company reported net bookings of $1.76 billion. Its mobile segment continues to provide stable revenue, with Zynga's Toon Blast surpassing a cumulative $3 billion in net bookings.

Company leadership asserts that the AI team's closure will have no impact on the scheduled launch date for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI. The global release is firmly set for November 19, 2026. Developers have emphasized that the vast majority of the game's world and character interactions are being crafted manually. The success of this "human-first" approach in mitigating the soaring production costs typical of AAA game development will be tested when sales figures for the 2026 holiday quarter are revealed.
