While its primary focus remains building a solar supply chain in the United States, T1 Energy has unveiled a strategic pivot to a different continent that is capturing market attention. The company plans to convert a former industrial facility in Norway into a state-of-the-art data center for artificial intelligence computing, a project that has just cleared a major initial obstacle.

Strategic Location and Power Advantage

The project's location in Mo i Rana, Norway, provides significant physical and economic benefits critical for energy-intensive AI operations. The cold northern climate drastically reduces the cost and energy required for server cooling, allowing for higher computing density. Furthermore, the power allocated for the site will come almost entirely from low-cost hydroelectric sources, a key advantage in a global market where demand for AI compute power far outstrips available electricity capacity.

Norwegian grid operator Statnett has granted the site a power allocation of 50 megawatts, secured through the end of 2033. This allocation covers the initial phase of the large-scale complex. To commence operations, the installation of uninterrupted power supplies and transformers is now required. If retrofit work proceeds according to schedule, the first data centers could be operational by the second quarter of 2027.

Market Reaction and Dual-Pronged Strategy

Investor sentiment has reacted positively to this strategic development. Over the past 30 days, T1 Energy's share price has climbed nearly 21 percent, reaching 6.65 euros.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying T1 Energy?

Management emphasizes that its core business surrounding the U.S. solar industry continues to be the top priority. However, the company is now actively seeking to maximize the value of its European assets. To this end, it has engaged Pareto Securities as an advisor. Concurrently, T1 Energy is pushing forward with expansion efforts on the ground in Norway. The company is currently awaiting approval for an additional 396 megawatts of grid capacity, alongside a decision concerning a further 60 megawatts tied to an ongoing appeals process.
