A training course on Building Information Modeling (BIM) has already reached capacity, underscoring the scramble for technical know-how in an industry struggling to meet housing targets. The online program, based on the international buildingSMART curriculum, commands roughly 1,440 euros per participant and begins in late June. With spots sold out, the appetite for digital planning fundamentals is clear.

Yet that hunger for new skills runs parallel to a deepening crisis in German construction. Industry bodies ZDB, HDB and the trade union IG BAU issued a joint position paper detailing a stark shortfall: only 206,600 apartments were completed in 2025, against an estimated annual need of 400,000 units. The groups are pushing for an expansion of KfW subsidies, particularly for the EH 55 efficiency standard, and faster approvals for the more than 450,000 already permitted but unstarted projects.

On the safety front, a new European standard took effect on 16 June 2026. DIN EN 17975 lays down mandatory rules for lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures — the controlled isolation of dangerous energy sources during maintenance. It covers electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical and thermal energy, aiming to prevent accidents caused by machines starting unexpectedly. Employers remain legally bound to carry out regular safety inspections under DGUV Vorschrift 3; for commercially used electrical devices, annual checks are compulsory, costing between 50 and 200 euros per device.

That preventive focus was reinforced on 11 June in Berlin, where the VDSI and occupational medicine representatives signed the "Berlin Declaration on Interdisciplinary Prevention". Marking the VDSI's 75th anniversary, the agreement formalizes closer cooperation between safety specialists and occupational physicians. Separately, the Initiative Gesundheit und Arbeit (iga) launched a digital training program on addiction prevention during Alcohol Awareness Week, teaching companies strategies to handle substance-related risks in the workplace.

Digitalisation is also reshaping fire safety. Experts increasingly rely on digital twins — 3D scans of existing buildings — to plan more precisely for properties in use. Laser scanners and LiDAR technology are becoming central to survey training. The Handwerkskammer Mannheim will host a seminar on digital project management in early July, covering construction site documentation and time tracking.

Meanwhile, IT security obligations are tightening. An information event on transposing the EU's NIS2 directive into German law is scheduled for late July. Small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as operators of critical infrastructure, face higher requirements. The event will focus on management liability and new reporting duties for IT security incidents.

For experienced workers over 25 in electrical and building services, a new path to the skilled trades diploma has opened. The ZVEH published a seven-module part-qualification set. Candidates can obtain the journeyman's certificate through an external examination, with the Federal Employment Agency providing funding.
