The shift toward mobile working has brought unexpected psychological costs for one group in particular: people who live by themselves. A large-scale U.S. study drawing on data from more than 500,000 individuals collected between 2011 and 2024 found that working from home significantly increases mental strain among single-person households. Roughly one-third of the rise in psychological distress recorded during the pandemic can be attributed to remote work, the researchers concluded.

No comparable negative effect was observed for employees living with families. German workplace experts confirm the findings and generally assess hybrid models – a mix of office presence and home office – as positive. The assessment comes as Germany’s sick-leave rate remained elevated at 5.83 percent in 2025, with the share of mental-health diagnoses climbing more than 50 percent since 2016.

Office Property Market Splits as Demand Shifts

Germany’s commercial real estate market is experiencing a sharp bifurcation. The latest Consensus office-market forecast shows prime rents rising in top metropolitan areas: Munich now commands €60 per square meter, Frankfurt €56, and Berlin €46.60. Yet vacancy rates are forecast to increase through the end of 2027 – Berlin expects 9.5 percent, Düsseldorf as high as 12 percent.

The driver is the spread of hybrid work models. Companies are using offices less for daily tasks and more for collaboration and representation. Demand is concentrating on high-quality, centrally located buildings, while older properties on the urban fringe are struggling to attract tenants.

Canteen Decline and Digital Push

The shift in office attendance has hit workplace cafeterias hard. The share of canteens in out-of-home meals fell from 16 percent in 2018 to 11 percent in 2024. Friday sales drop by roughly one-third. Operators are responding with “ultra-fresh” concepts and converting dining spaces into multifunctional office areas.

On June 9, 2026, an industry consortium launched “Euro-Office,” an open-source European alternative to established office software suites. Initially available as a browser version, the project aims to strengthen digital sovereignty.

The impact of artificial intelligence on IT jobs is also reshaping entry-level positions. While experienced professionals remain in demand, job ads for junior roles have dropped across several European countries, as routine tasks become increasingly automated.

New Virtual Risks and Economic Pressures

As work expands into the Metaverse, new employer duties emerge. Companies must protect employees against virtual sexual harassment and discrimination. Experts recommend clear codes of conduct and technical safeguards.

The economic outlook for many service firms remains strained. A DIHK business survey from early summer 2026 reveals that more than 20 percent of companies plan to cut staff, and nearly one in three intends to reduce investment. Business associations are calling for more flexible working-time rules – shifting from daily maximum hours to a weekly cap.
