The world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy, finds its equity valuation at a multi-year low as its monumental cryptocurrency bet teeters on the brink of profitability. This precarious situation unfolds just as the company prepares to release its fourth-quarter 2025 financial results this Wednesday.

In a move that appears poorly timed, Strategy executed a significant Bitcoin purchase immediately before the latest market downturn. Between January 26 and February 1, the company acquired an additional 855 coins. The transaction, valued at approximately $75.3 million, was executed at an average price of $87,974 per Bitcoin.

This purchase was financed entirely through the sale of 673,527 shares under an existing capital increase program, which generated net proceeds of $106.1 million. The strategic misstep is now evident: with Bitcoin's price currently hovering just above $77,000, the newly acquired assets were bought at a substantial premium. Over the weekend, when the cryptocurrency briefly dipped below $75,000, Strategy was sitting on nearly $1 billion in unrealized losses from this purchase alone.

Five Years of Accumulation, a Razor-Thin Margin

Strategy's total Bitcoin holdings now stand at 713,502 coins. The company has spent an aggregate of $54.26 billion to build this position, resulting in an average cost basis of $76,052 per Bitcoin. At the current market price near $77,000, the entire multi-billion dollar portfolio is barely in the black. For a corporate treasury strategy pursued aggressively for over five years, this represents a sobering outcome.

The market's reaction to this vulnerability has been severe. In pre-market trading on Monday, Strategy's shares plunged more than 7%, hitting a fresh multi-year low of around $138.80. Since peaking in July 2025, the stock has collapsed by 69%. A staggering 43.4% of that decline has occurred in just the last three months.

Financial Obligations and Shareholder Commitments

Adding complexity to the balance sheet, Strategy carries a debt load of $8.2 billion. Management notes that only a minor portion of this debt matures in 2027. The firm has emphasized it maintains a 30-month dividend coverage buffer. However, a recent decision increased the dividend rate on its Series A Preferred Stock from 11.00% to 11.25%. While this serves as a positive signal for preferred shareholders, it also constitutes an incremental financial burden on the company's cash flow.
