Strategy's Billion-Dollar Bitcoin Acquisition: A New Chapter in Corporate Treasury Strategy

In a significant move for its digital asset reserves, Strategy executed one of its largest single Bitcoin purchases last week, acquiring approximately $1.57 billion worth of the cryptocurrency. This transaction marks the fifth-biggest corporate buy in the company's history and was primarily funded through the sale of preferred shares, an instrument that has become a cornerstone of its capital strategy.

Funding and Execution Details

The purchase of 22,337 Bitcoin was conducted between March 9 and 13, with an average price per coin of $70,194. This acquisition boosts Strategy's total holdings to 761,068 BTC. The cumulative cost basis for this entire position, inclusive of fees, now stands at roughly $57.6 billion.

Financing for this substantial outlay was achieved through a dual-track approach. The company generated net proceeds of $1.18 billion from the sale of approximately 11.8 million shares of its 10% Series A Preferred Stock (STRC). An additional $396 million was raised through the sale of common stock. Data from the tracking platform STRC.live indicates that STRC sales alone last week generated an estimated 10,767 BTC worth of capital—a figure 281% above the four-week average. In a recent research note, Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer characterized STRC as the "backbone of an ecosystem of yield-generating stablecoin protocols." He now views the instrument not merely as a funding vehicle but as an integral component of a broader financial infrastructure.

Ambitious Targets and Current Trajectory

Strategy's ambitious "42/42" plan outlines a goal to raise a total of $84 billion through equity and convertible notes by 2027, earmarked for further Bitcoin accumulation. As of March 15, the company still has $6.3 billion in MSTR stock and $1.96 billion in STRC shares available under this program.

Another key milestone is coming into focus: reaching a treasury holding of one million Bitcoin. To achieve this target by the end of 2026, Strategy would need to purchase around 6,158 BTC weekly. Since initiating its Bitcoin strategy in August 2020, the company's average monthly purchase rate has been approximately 10,700 BTC. Its aggressive pace continues in the current year, with acquisitions already totaling about 64,948 BTC, putting it well ahead of the historical annual rate.

Financial Performance and Market Context

Despite the record holdings, the company's financial results present a mixed picture. For the fourth quarter of 2025, Strategy reported a net loss of $12.6 billion and an operating loss of $17.4 billion. Its Bitcoin treasury now represents over 3.5% of the cryptocurrency's total ever-available supply. At current market prices, these holdings are associated with unrealized losses of approximately $1.6 billion.

In pre-market trading today, Strategy's shares advanced more than four percent, reaching a price of around €128. This represents a gain of roughly 30% above the monthly low recorded in early February. The firm remains committed to its long-term objective of doubling its Bitcoin-per-share ratio within seven years, targeting an annual Bitcoin return in the range of 5% to 14%.
