Strategy's $5 Billion Equity Engine Faces Market Indifference

Strategy's aggressive Bitcoin accumulation, funded by its STRC shares, isn't driving a rally. The firm holds 3.8% of supply but faces an $14.46B unrealized loss as market momentum stalls.

Strategy's relentless Bitcoin acquisition strategy, fueled by a novel equity instrument, is hitting a wall of market apathy. Despite raising a staggering $5 billion in just seven months through its STRC preferred shares, the company's massive purchases are failing to ignite a sustained rally in the cryptocurrency's price. This disconnect between corporate buying power and market momentum is casting a shadow over the firm's ambitious plans.

The company's Bitcoin holdings now stand at 766,970 coins, representing roughly 3.8 percent of the entire circulating supply. The average purchase price sits at $75,644 per Bitcoin. In a recent five-day spree between April 1 and 5, Strategy added another 4,871 Bitcoin to its treasury at a cost of approximately $330 million. This aggressive accumulation continues unabated, even as the broader market shows signs of strain. Bitcoin's realized market capitalization has fallen by $29 billion since February, and open interest in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has seen outflows exceeding $4 billion—a figure that dwarfs Strategy's consistent demand.

Financing this buying spree is the STRC instrument, a variable-rate, perpetual preferred equity vehicle paying an 11.5 percent dividend. CEO Phong Le has likened its explosive growth trajectory to the launch of the iPhone, noting it outpaced early revenue from Apple, Gold ETFs, and Ethereum ETFs. Only BlackRock's IBIT grew faster. The structure is designed to pass the first 11.5 percent of Bitcoin's returns to STRC holders, with any upside beyond that accruing to common shareholders. The instrument has proven popular with retail investors, who now constitute about 80 percent of its holder base and are drawn to its promise of stable monthly returns with lower volatility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Strategy?

Wall Street remains broadly supportive of this capital-raising engine. In the past three months, twelve analysts have unanimously rated Strategy a "Buy" or "Strong Buy." The average price target among them is $284.17. BTIG analyst Andrew Harte recently reaffirmed his Buy rating with a $250 target, implying a potential upside of around 102 percent from current levels. Bernstein SocGen maintains an "Outperform" rating with a more bullish $450 target. Analysts view STRC as a central tool for increasing the Bitcoin-per-share metric over the long term.

However, this optimism exists alongside stark financial figures from the first quarter of 2026. Strategy reported an unrealized loss on its digital assets of $14.46 billion. The carrying value of its Bitcoin portfolio was $51.65 billion as of March 31, accompanied by a deferred tax asset of $2.42 billion that provides some balance sheet relief. The stock itself is feeling the pressure, trading near $110.46 (€110.46) and down nearly 18 percent year-to-date. It currently sits about 18 percent below its 50-day moving average of €114. Chart technicians identify a key resistance level at $138 that the share price must convincingly break through to signal a sustained recovery, even with Bitcoin recently climbing past $72,000 on geopolitical developments.

The company's declared goal is to hold one million Bitcoin by the end of 2026. With remaining "at-the-market" (ATM) equity offering capacity of $22.65 billion for STRC and $27.10 billion for common stock—totaling over $49 billion—the financial firepower for further purchases appears secure. The critical question is whether Strategy's solo buying campaign can ultimately overcome broader market forces that have, so far, remained indifferent to its efforts.
