In a strategic move ahead of a critical procurement decision, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has secured a new partnership aimed at strengthening its proposal for a multi-billion dollar Canadian submarine program. The German shipbuilder has entered into a collaboration with CAE, a global specialist in training and simulation solutions, to enhance its comprehensive offering.

A Focus on Long-Term Support and Training

Signed in Ottawa on March 4, the teaming agreement between TKMS and CAE centers on jointly developing and delivering integrated training, simulation, and in-service support for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP). The partnership is designed to provide a complete package encompassing crew training, modern simulation systems, and both digital and physical training infrastructure. The scope also includes facility management and long-term maintenance support.

This emphasis on through-life support reflects a modern reality in major defense acquisitions: the evaluation extends far beyond the physical platform to encompass decades of operational readiness, sustainment, and personnel training. The alliance also establishes a framework for potential collaboration on other international naval programs requiring training components, leveraging TKMS's global client network and CAE's worldwide training footprint.

The Multi-Billion Dollar Canadian Competition

The CPSP, launched in 2021, seeks to provide the Royal Canadian Navy with up to twelve new submarines. Reported program costs are approximately 60 billion Canadian dollars, with some lifecycle estimates—factoring in operation, maintenance, and infrastructure—projecting a significantly higher total value.

TKMS is proposing up to twelve vessels of its Type 212CD design, with an estimated procurement value of around $12 billion USD. A key feature of its bid is the air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, which enables extended submerged operations without requiring nuclear power.

The competitive field was narrowed to two finalists in August 2025: TKMS with the Type 212CD and Hanwha Ocean with its KSS-III design. Following the submission of final offers in early March, the Canadian government's decision is anticipated in May or June. The CAE partnership aligns with TKMS's established local industrial strategy in Canada, which already includes agreements with Magellan and Seaspan Shipyards.

Operational Momentum and Market Context

Alongside its Canadian campaign, TKMS recently reported robust operational performance. As of December 31, 2025, the company's order backlog reached a record €18.7 billion. Furthermore, TKMS raised its revenue guidance for the 2025/26 fiscal year (ending September 30), now forecasting growth of 2% to 5%, up from a prior range of -1% to +2%. The company's medium-term targets aim for approximately 10% annual growth and an EBIT margin exceeding 7%.

Additional prospects are emerging in India, where TKMS is reportedly close to finalizing a major contract valued between $8 and $9 billion USD. While cost negotiations are concluded, the final signature is expected to slip into the new fiscal year.

On the Frankfurt stock exchange, TKMS shares have traded sideways recently following a strong start to the year. Closing at €92.90 on Friday, the price sits about 7.7% below its 52-week high of €100.60. A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 32.4 indicates significantly cooled near-term momentum.

The coming months present key catalysts: TKMS will release quarterly figures on May 11, followed by the anticipated Canadian contract award in May or June. The timing of the CAE announcement appears calculated to visibly reinforce the training and support pillar of TKMS's CPSP bid just as the decision process enters its final phase.
