A major technology partnership has been solidified for lithium developer Rock Tech. The company, alongside Siemens Canada, signed a strategic memorandum of understanding on March 2, 2026, at the PDAC convention in Toronto, the world's premier mining conference. The core objective is to establish state-of-the-art lithium conversion facilities in Canada, utilizing proven German engineering as a foundational model.

Political and Strategic Backing

This collaboration reinforces German-Canadian ties under the G7 Critical Minerals Production Alliance. Tim Hodgson, Canada's Minister of Energy and Resources, highlighted that this second round of strategic investments demonstrates how Canada and its G7 allies are moving "from ambition to concrete action." Stefan Rouenhoff, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, explicitly welcomed the deepening of commercial relations.

The partnership aims to jointly pursue public funding opportunities through Natural Resources Canada, the Government of Ontario, and various German-Canadian cooperation programs.

Digital Replication for Efficiency Gains

A key component of the agreement involves Siemens deploying its digitalization technology, including advanced "Digital Twin" solutions, for the design, construction, and operation of the planned lithium converter in Red Rock, Ontario. The plan is to create a digital replica based on the blueprints of Rock Tech's fully permitted German facility in Guben and adapt it for the Canadian project.

This approach offers significant advantages. Using the already approved and engineered Guben plant as a template is expected to accelerate development timelines, reduce technical risks, and enhance capital efficiency. Subsequently, a separate digital twin of the completed Canadian site could serve as a blueprint for additional facilities across Canada and other international markets.

The Red Rock plant is designed for an annual production capacity of up to 32,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent. According to company estimates, this output would be sufficient to supply batteries for approximately 900,000 electric vehicles each year.

Guben: The European Flagship Project

The company's foundational project remains in Germany. The lithium converter in Guben, slated for commissioning in 2027, is projected to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually. Rock Tech states this will be the largest facility of its kind in Europe. Recognized as a strategic project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, it is intended to lessen Europe's reliance on Asian supply chains.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rock Tech Lithium?

The project has secured €100 million in direct grants from the State of Brandenburg and Deutsche Bahn. Rock Tech recently succeeded in lowering the estimated total investment cost by roughly €50 million to approximately €680 million. Operational costs are also forecast to drop significantly, from an initial €5,033 to about €3,878 per tonne of lithium hydroxide—a reduction of 23 percent.

The company reports the facility's carbon footprint will be 30 percent below the industry average.

Commitment to Environmental Standards

Rock Tech's environmental credentials for the Guben operations were solidified in March 2024 with the attainment of EMAS certification, the European Union's most demanding environmental management system. This accreditation confirms that sustainability, resource efficiency, and environmental protection are deeply embedded in corporate strategy.

By 2030, the company targets a CO?-free supply chain, climate-neutral logistics, and intelligent management of energy, water, and waste. At least 90 percent of the by-products generated during lithium production are planned to be repurposed in other industries.

Market Outlook and Forthcoming Results

On the commercial front, Mercedes-Benz has already secured a binding offtake agreement for an average of 10,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year from the Guben facility. Investors can expect further insights with the release of Rock Tech's fourth-quarter 2025 financial results on April 22, 2026.
