The Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler Rail is poised for a significant week, with its 2025 annual results due tomorrow coinciding with a major overhaul of its supervisory board. This timing is strategic, as the company navigates financial recovery and positions itself for future growth under new leadership.

Financial Recovery in the Spotlight

All eyes are on tomorrow's figures to see if management has delivered on its promises. For 2025, the executive team projected an EBIT margin between 4% and 5%, alongside revenue growth of well over 10%. These targets were set against a challenging backdrop: flood disasters in Valencia, the Valais region, and Dürnrohr in 2024 deferred approximately 350 million Swiss francs in revenue into the following year and compressed the EBIT margin to just 3.1%.

Looking ahead to 2026, the group is targeting revenue exceeding 5 billion francs for the first time, a goal expected to be fueled by the delayed income from the prior disaster-affected periods. Concurrent operational challenges persist, including a mandatory retrofit of 25 vehicles in Darmstadt and Basel at Stadler's own expense, to be completed by the end of 2026. Furthermore, prosecutors in Milan are investigating the safety mechanisms of a new Tramlink model following an incident.

A Boardroom Transformation with Industry Clout

This financial test comes as the company prepares for a generational shift in its boardroom. Two long-serving members, Christoph Franz (former CEO of Lufthansa and Swiss) and Wojciech Kostrzewa, are stepping down after 15 and 14 years of service, respectively. Their proposed successors bring a fresh, deeply relevant perspective to the table.

Sabrina Soussan, former Co-CEO of Siemens Mobility, offers firsthand knowledge of the rail market from the perspective of a direct competitor. Michael Schöllhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space since 2021, contributes extensive expertise in managing complex, large-scale international projects—a discipline critical to profitability in the train manufacturing sector. Their appointments require formal confirmation at the Annual General Meeting in Zurich on May 5, 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Stadler Rail?

Market Valuation Reflects Lingering Uncertainty

The market currently prices in a notable degree of caution regarding Stadler's prospects. The stock trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of approximately 10, a clear discount to competitors Siemens and Alstom, which command multiples between 13 and 17. Since the start of the year, the share price has declined nearly 10%, recently touching a 52-week low of 19.94 euros. This performance suggests investors have yet to fully discount the unresolved questions facing the firm.

Tomorrow's report on March 18th serves as the first concrete benchmark. Should the annual results confirm the communicated margin targets and bolster confidence in the 2026 outlook, it could establish a foundation for gradually closing the valuation gap with the industry. The announcement will be scrutinized as a test for both the current management and the incoming leadership team set to take the helm in May.
