SpaceX shares climbed nearly six percent last week, shaking off an early dip to close above $160. The rebound came after the stock touched support near $155, where institutional buyers stepped in. But two entirely different catalysts are now converging to drive volatility: the company’s official admission into the Nasdaq-100 on Tuesday, and newly disclosed stock purchases by two members of Congress.

The index entry triggers a mandatory wave of buying from passive funds. JPMorgan estimates that exchange-traded funds will need to acquire roughly $4.3 billion worth of SpaceX shares in the coming days. With the free float estimated at just four to ten percent of total shares outstanding, the supply-demand imbalance is extreme. Analysts expect the bulk of these forced purchases to hit in after-hours trading on Monday evening, ahead of the official inclusion.

The congressional trades add a political dimension. Republican Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania and Democrat Gil Cisneros of California both reported buying SpaceX stock within days of the June IPO. Meuser’s minor child purchased shares worth between $15,001 and $50,000 on June 15; Cisneros ordered a package valued at $1,001 to $15,000 three days later. Meuser sits on the House Financial Services Committee, which oversees securities law. Cisneros serves on the Armed Services Committee, which controls the Pentagon budget — and the Pentagon is one of SpaceX’s largest customers. No evidence of insider trading has surfaced, but ethics monitors expect more lawmakers from both parties to report similar trades in coming weeks.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SpaceX?

Meanwhile, Wall Street remains deeply divided on the stock’s fair value. A survey of eleven analysts yields a median price target of $227, implying a 33 percent upside from current levels. But the individual targets span an unusually wide range: from $62 to $310 per share. The bullish camp points to SpaceX’s growing ambitions in artificial intelligence. In the first quarter of 2026, revenue rose 15 percent to $4.7 billion, with connectivity services contributing 70 percent and space and AI each accounting for roughly 15 percent.

Bearish analysts focus on the bottom line. The company reported a net loss of $4.3 billion for the quarter, compared with a loss of just $528 million a year earlier. The red ink stems largely from surging research and development costs tied to AI. At the same time, a successful multi-billion-dollar bond placement and a strong institutional bid from funds like ARK Invest suggest confidence in the long-term story.

Looking ahead, the forced index buying should provide a tailwind this week, but headwinds are building for late summer. Lock-up agreements for company insiders expire at the end of July or early August, coinciding with the release of fresh quarterly results. If disappointing numbers meet a wave of insider selling, the stock could face significant pressure — a scenario that would test the resolute buying that held the $155 support line last week.
