SoftBank's Aggressive AI Push Raises Credit Concerns

The relentless pace of SoftBank Group Corp.'s investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure is drawing increased scrutiny from credit markets. While the Japanese technology investor continues to secure key technologies, its aggressive capital allocation strategy is pressuring its financial standing, as reflected in rising risk premiums.

Market Skepticism Manifests in Credit Instruments

A clear signal of growing investor concern is visible in the derivatives market. The cost to insure against a default on SoftBank's debt, measured by its Credit Default Swaps (CDS), has climbed to an 11-month high of approximately 355 basis points. This marks the highest level since April 2025. The company now carries the highest credit risk premiums among major Japanese corporations, trading about 100 basis points above those of automaker Nissan.

This market movement follows a recent revision by S&P Global Ratings, which changed its outlook on SoftBank to negative from stable. Analysts at the agency cited the extended timeline required for the group's new investments to generate liquid returns and stabilize portfolio quality.

Strategic Investment in Kandou AI

The latest move in SoftBank's expansive strategy is a participation in a $225 million strategic funding round for semiconductor startup Kandou AI. The investment, which included other industry leaders, values the startup at $400 million post-funding. The deal secures SoftBank access to a critical hardware innovation aimed at solving a core bottleneck in modern AI systems: data transfer between processors and memory.

As AI models grow exponentially, the primary constraint often shifts from pure computing power to data transmission speed. Kandou's technology utilizes specialized copper connections for networking graphics processing units (GPUs), rather than relying on expensive fiber optic cables. This approach allows for data transfer with lower power consumption and over greater distances, offering chip designers significantly more flexibility in data center construction.

A Broader, Capital-Intensive Infrastructure Plan

The Kandou AI stake is part of a much larger series of commitments designed to cover the entire AI value chain. Just days ago, SoftBank announced plans to construct a $33 billion gas-fired power plant in Ohio, specifically to meet the enormous energy demands of future data centers. This is compounded by an increased $30 billion investment in OpenAI.

On the revenue side, a recent initial public offering provided some financial counterbalance. The listing of payment service provider PayPay on the US Nasdaq exchange raised nearly $880 million, marking the largest US listing by a Japanese company in a decade.

The central challenge for SoftBank's management, which will be a key focus during the upcoming reporting season, is balancing these ambitious AI investments with necessary balance sheet stability. The company is scheduled to present its next detailed business results on May 7, 2026.
