SoftBank Faces Mounting Financial and Political Headwinds

The Japanese technology investment giant SoftBank is currently contending with significant challenges on multiple fronts. Wall Street's growing concerns about the conglomerate's financial stability coincide with intervention from Tokyo regarding a major U.S. infrastructure project, creating a perfect storm for the company. At the heart of the financial unease lies its massive, concentrated funding of artificial intelligence developer OpenAI.

Wall Street Sounds the Alarm on OpenAI Bet

Analysts are increasingly focused on SoftBank's creditworthiness, with particular scrutiny on its financial commitments to OpenAI. In March, investment bank Jefferies downgraded the company's stock to "Underperform," slashing its price target from 5,118 yen to 3,140 yen. The move was prompted by the enormous financial obligations tied to the AI investment.

Market experts warn of structural risks arising from this highly concentrated position. SoftBank provided approximately 85% of the capital in recent funding rounds, which propelled OpenAI's valuation from $150 billion to as high as $840 billion. This inflation simultaneously swelled SoftBank's reported net asset value. Echoing these concerns, rating agency S&P Global revised its outlook on SoftBank to negative in March, citing how the $30 billion in commitments substantially constrain the group's financial flexibility.

Political Friction Over U.S. Gas Project

Separately, a political dispute has erupted over a $33 billion gas-fired power plant in Ohio, USA. This facility is the first concrete result of a $550 billion investment pact between the United States and Japan. SoftBank was set to lead the construction as project developer and collect lucrative fees, but the Japanese government has now reduced this compensation by over 90%.

Officials in Tokyo criticize the lack of a competitive bidding process and point to the conglomerate's limited experience in the energy sector. There are fears that Japan could be sidelined in future project selections. Despite the drastic cut, funds will continue to flow to SoftBank over the next 15 to 20 years, provided the project achieves its target capacity of 9.2 gigawatts. Major initial contracts, including a $10 billion deal for turbines from GE Vernova, have already been awarded.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank?

Bridging a Multi-Billion Dollar Funding Gap

To manage these substantial investments, SoftBank's management is reportedly seeking a bridge loan of up to $40 billion. A consortium of four lenders, including JPMorgan Chase, is expected to secure the twelve-month financing. The capital requirements of OpenAI are colossal: according to Microsoft documents, the developer recorded a loss of roughly $12 billion in the third quarter of 2025. This translates to an annualized cash burn rate exceeding $50 billion. Additionally, SoftBank transfers about $3 billion per year to OpenAI for local usage rights in Japan.

These pressures are compounded by legal uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Japan trade agreement. A ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on tariffs has put the future of the entire pact in jeopardy, following a similar agreement being declared void by Malaysia. SoftBank is scheduled to provide concrete figures on the financial impact of these geopolitical hurdles and its rising debt burden when it releases its next quarterly report on May 7, 2026.
