SK Hynix's Rally Hits New Heights as Analyst Cuts Rating — A Tale of Two Signals
27.04.2026 - 18:41:39 | boerse-global.de
The South Korean memory chipmaker is living a paradox. Its stock just touched a fresh 52-week high, climbing 5 percent on Monday to 1,293,000 won, bringing year-to-date gains to 91 percent. Yet for the first time in nine months, a major brokerage has downgraded the shares.
BNK Investment & Securities lowered its rating from Buy to Hold, keeping a price target of 1.3 million won. Analyst Lee Min-hee pointed to fading momentum in the second half of the year, arguing that Big Tech's massive capital spending on artificial intelligence is now stabilizing at elevated levels rather than accelerating. The shift to next-generation HBM4 production is also expected to compress average selling price growth. BNK now forecasts operating profit of just 177 trillion won for 2026, well below earlier internal estimates.
A Record Quarter and an IEEE First
The caution comes just days after SK Hynix reported what it called a record quarterly performance. First-quarter operating profit hit roughly $25 billion — five times the year-ago figure — despite what the company described as a seasonally weak period. Management credited sustained demand from AI infrastructure investments.
On April 24, SK Hynix received the IEEE Corporate Innovation Award in New York, the first such recognition in its history. The award, given since 1986 to companies driving societal progress through technological innovation, cited the firm's early leadership in High Bandwidth Memory. Chief Development Officer Ahn Hyun accepted the prize in person.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
Days earlier, Ahn delivered a keynote at the TSMC Technology Symposium 2026 in San Jose, where he outlined an expanding alliance with the Taiwanese foundry. Starting with HBM4, SK Hynix will use TSMC's logic processes for the base die, combining its own fifth-generation DRAM process with a 12-nanometer base die from TSMC. The 16-layer, 48-gigabyte HBM4 module carries the label "Powered by base die in TSMC advanced logic." The partnership extends beyond HBM to custom memory solutions spanning DRAM, NAND, and the new High Bandwidth Flash technology.
Supply Tightness and Market Share Bets
Memory chip supply constraints are expected to persist into the second half of 2026, according to analyst estimates. An SK Hynix executive told the earnings call that customers are prioritizing supply security over price.
Bank of America has named SK Hynix its global "Top Pick" in the memory sector. UBS projects the company will capture roughly 70 percent of the HBM4 market for Nvidia's upcoming Rubin platform in 2026.
The stock's relative strength index sits near 69 — technically not yet overbought, but close. The next test will be whether SK Hynix can actually deliver enough HBM4 units to meet demand from Nvidia and hyperscalers. If it can, the UBS market share forecast could quickly become the industry benchmark.
The Other Side of the Business
Beyond the AI narrative, the legacy memory business is throwing off real numbers. Enterprise SSD prices surged more than 50 percent in the first quarter, and analysts expect a similar jump in the current quarter. SK Hynix is expanding NAND production at its Dalian, China facility to meet that demand.
SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Revenue nearly tripled to roughly 53 trillion won, with an operating margin of 72 percent. A potential strike at Samsung Electronics, which could begin in late May, may also push customers toward SK Hynix.
What Comes Next
The market remains divided on valuation. Some brokers have sharply raised profit forecasts, while others fear the late-cycle stage of the AI boom. Whether the global $700 billion in AI investment will ultimately pay off for the companies making those bets now requires hard evidence.
That evidence arrives this week. Microsoft and Alphabet are set to report quarterly results, offering concrete data on AI infrastructure demand. If spending by the tech giants falls short of expectations, SK Hynix's current valuation could come under immediate pressure.
