SK Hynix's Balancing Act: Gas Leak Evacuation Meets Nvidia-Backed Digital Twin Ambitions

The same Monday that saw SK Hynix shares hit a fresh 52-week high also delivered a jarring disruption at one of its most critical manufacturing hubs. Just before 10:30 a.m. local time on June 1, a fire broke out in a gas room on the sixth floor of the Cheongju Campus 4, triggering the evacuation of around 3,600 workers from the adjacent M15 and M15X facilities. The blaze was quickly extinguished by sprinklers, but the incident released hydrogen fluoride gas at levels measuring 5 parts per million — above the legal limit of 3 ppm. Between six and eleven employees were taken to the company’s on-site hospital with eye irritation; none suffered serious injury.
Authorities and internal safety teams are now investigating the cause of the fire and the ensuing gas leak. Crucially, SK Hynix has stated that production at both M15 and M15X was not interrupted and remains stable. For investors, that assurance carries particular weight because M15 is dedicated to NAND flash memory, while M15X is being readied for the next generation of DRAM — including the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) that currently drives the bulk of the company’s profits in the AI boom. Any prolonged disruption there would ripple directly through the supply chains of hyperscalers and chip designers such as Nvidia.
That Nvidia connection resurfaced in a very different light just hours after the evacuation. SK Telecom announced a joint deployment with Nvidia of so-called “Agentic Digital Twin Modeling” technology inside SK Hynix’s semiconductor fabs. A proof-of-concept had already been running in one factory since 2025; now the partners are moving toward gradual commercialization aligned with SK Hynix’s roadmap for a fully “Autonomous Factory” by 2030. Nvidia confirmed that the digital twins are built on its Omniverse platform and that SK Hynix and SK Telecom are validating the Nvidia Agent Toolkit for manufacturing-specific physical AI applications.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?
For a company that already supplies the memory chips powering Nvidia’s AI accelerators, the digital twin initiative adds a second narrative: SK Hynix as an early adopter of AI-driven manufacturing itself. The technology allows production layouts and process parameters to be stress-tested in a virtual environment before being implemented on the fab floor, reducing costly trial-and-error and accelerating data-driven decisions. Yet the announcement, while strategically significant, lacks the concrete financial metrics that analysts typically demand. There are no quantified impacts on yield, throughput, or capital efficiency — at least not yet.
What does have hard numbers attached is the company’s current financial momentum. In the first quarter of 2026, SK Hynix posted revenue of 52.6 trillion won and an operating profit of 37.6 trillion won, fueled by surging demand for HBM, high-capacity server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs. The stock has rallied roughly 249% since the start of the year, touching 2,363,000 won on Monday — a new 52-week high — despite the evacuation news. By Tuesday, shares edged slightly lower to 2,375,000 won, still just a whisker below the 52-week peak of 2,398,000 won. The relative strength index sits near 69, indicating a hot but not yet overheated market.
The twin developments on a single day underscore the dual reality SK Hynix now navigates. On one side, it is operating near peak capacity in a red-hot AI cycle, pushing the boundaries of automation with a blue-chip partner. On the other, it must maintain impeccable safety and operational discipline inside factories where even a minor gas leak in a non-production area can force a large-scale evacuation. The market has so far chosen to focus on the strategic prize rather than the incident, but the investigation’s outcome — and any potential regulatory follow-up from Korean authorities — will determine whether the gas leak remains a footnote or becomes a more consequential setback.
