South Korea’s stock market is in uncharted territory, and at the epicentre stands SK Hynix. The memory chip giant has already more than doubled this year — up 186% — and now a new wave of leveraged products is about to give retail investors a high-octane way to chase the rally. The Korea Exchange has approved the first 2x leveraged exchange-traded funds and notes on SK Hynix, set to launch on 27 May 2026 at an issue price of 20,000 won — roughly $13. That is a fraction of the stock’s current level near 1.94 million won.

The psychological barrier of a nearly two-million-won share price had effectively locked out many small-pocketed traders. Asset managers designed the low entry point to lure them back in. But Sejong University professor Kim Dae-jong warns the cheap ticket could dull risk awareness, especially among speculators terrified of missing the next leg up.

The frenzy isn’t built on hype alone. SK Hynix’s first-quarter 2026 revenue came in at 52.58 trillion won, a 198% surge year-on-year, while operating profit hit 37.61 trillion won — an eye-watering margin of 72%. The cash pile swelled to 54.3 trillion won by the end of March. All of it is being driven by high-bandwidth memory and enterprise SSDs, the core components powering the latest generation of AI infrastructure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Analysts see no let-up. On 20 May, NH Investment & Securities’ Ryu Young-ho hiked his price target from 1.8 million won to 3.1 million won, underpinned by a forecast of 261 trillion won in operating profit for the full year. Over at Nomura Securities, the view is equally bullish: the brokerage lifted its 2026 KOSPI target to as high as 11,000 points, explicitly citing HBM demand as the engine.

Institutional investors are already voting with their wallets. On the day Nvidia’s blockbuster quarterly results sent SK Hynix shares soaring 11%, institutions piled in with net purchases of over 1.4 trillion won in a single session — even as foreign investors extended their selling streak to 11 consecutive sessions. According to Samsung Securities, existing retail shareholders have consistently been adding to positions as prices climbed, a practice known as pyramiding that signals deep conviction in the memory supercycle.

The next catalyst may be a US listing. SK Hynix plans to launch a confidential initial public offering of American Depositary Receipts in the second half of 2026, aiming to raise up to $14 billion for new chip plants in Yongin, South Korea, and Indiana. That would push its market capitalisation — already hovering near $948 billion — past the trillion-dollar mark, making it only the second South Korean company ever to reach that threshold. KB Securities describes the company as being in a “virtual zero-supply phase” for premium memory products and expects a further re-rating through 2027.

All the same, the rally has pushed the stock within 2% of its 52-week high of 1.976 million won, and the relative strength index sits at 68.9 — close to overbought territory. If the foreign selling pressure persists, Nomura warns, a sharp correction cannot be ruled out. For now, the combination of retail-friendly leverage, institutional conviction and a seemingly insatiable appetite for AI chips is keeping the memory supercycle on an extraordinary trajectory.
