The price of silver surged past $119 per troy ounce in late January 2026, setting a new all-time record. This remarkable ascent, however, is creating significant strain for industrial consumers and leading market observers to warn of a market increasingly detached from its underlying fundamentals, fueled instead by speculative forces.

A constellation of macroeconomic factors is providing broad support for precious metals. A US dollar that has weakened by nearly eleven percent over the past twelve months, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and market anticipation of further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve are all contributing to the bullish environment. Gold, silver's more expensive counterpart, has also broken new ground, surpassing the $5,500 per ounce level for the first time.

Yet, this price explosion is testing the limits of industrial demand. According to the Silver Institute, industrial consumption accounted for approximately 680 million ounces in 2024, representing about 60% of total global demand. Key sectors like solar power, electric vehicles, and semiconductor manufacturing continue to drive structural need, with global photovoltaic capacity projected to hit 665 gigawatts in 2026. However, some major consumers are beginning to seek alternatives. Leading Chinese solar panel manufacturers, including Longi Green Energy and Jinko Solar, have announced plans to partially switch to more affordable base metals in response to the soaring costs.

A "Broken" Market Driven by Speculation?

Several prominent analysts are voicing deep concerns about the market's current dynamics. Nicky Shiels of MKS PAMP has described the precious metals complex as "broken in the face of unprecedented volatility," noting that prices are being driven less by physical supply and demand and more by volatile flows of liquidity.

Maximilian Tomei, CEO of Galena Asset Management, offers an even starker assessment. "The fundamentals do not explain a commodity that has risen 200 percent," he states. "The way silver is behaving is exaggerated—it's a series of decouplings."

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

Bloomberg analyst Mike McGlone provides a historical perspective, noting that the current premium of 3.8 times the 60-month average has only been exceeded three times in data going back to 1954: in December 1979 and January and February of 1980. His conclusion is pointed: "I think silver will mark a high this year that will stand for years."

Tightening Supply Meets Soaring Demand

On the supply side, a critical bottleneck is intensifying. The mining industry is struggling to keep pace with demand. Only 28% of global silver supply comes from primary silver mines, with the remaining 72% produced as a by-product of mining for other metals like copper, lead, and zinc.

Recent production forecasts highlight the constraint. Fresnillo, the world's largest primary silver producer, revised its 2026 production target downward on January 28th to a range of 42 to 46.5 million ounces, from a previous guidance of 45 to 51 million ounces. In contrast, Pan American Silver reported output of 22.8 million ounces for 2025, exceeding its own forecast.

The Performance Context:
- Silver price climbed to over $119 per ounce in late January 2026.
- Year-to-date gain for 2026: approximately 65%.
- The metal already registered a gain of 145% throughout 2025.

A Warning on Volatility

The sheer velocity of the price move has experts cautioning about potential downside risks. Rhona O'Connell of StoneX warns, "We are in dangerous territory. If the price starts to fall, it could go down just as steeply as it went up." She suggests the near-vertical movements witnessed in recent weeks could be mirrored in reverse during a market correction, leaving investors exposed to dramatic swings.
