Silver's Slide: Geopolitical Tensions and a Strong Dollar Pressure Leveraged ETC

Mounting conflict in the Middle East is sending significant ripples through commodity markets. A triple-leveraged exchange-traded commodity tracking silver, the WisdomTree Silver 3x Daily Leveraged ETC, is facing pronounced headwinds. The combination of a robust US dollar and fading expectations for interest rate cuts is currently translating into tangible losses for investors in this instrument.

Shifting Rate Expectations Add to the Burden

A transformed interest rate landscape is compounding the pressure on silver. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is fueling a surge in oil prices, reigniting inflation concerns. Market observers now anticipate that the US Federal Reserve will refrain from implementing any interest rate reductions for the remainder of 2026. This marks a sharp reversal from pre-conflict forecasts, which had priced in at least two cuts.

Persistently high interest rates elevate the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like silver. This dynamic weighs directly on the futures contracts that underpin the ETC, creating a fundamental challenge for its performance.

The Dollar's Dominance Drives Selling

The primary force behind the recent price decline is the strengthening US currency. Remarks from US President Donald Trump regarding potential further military action against Iran propelled the dollar index toward the 100-point threshold. As silver is traded in US dollars, a more powerful greenback makes the precious metal more expensive for buyers outside the dollar zone.

This triggered immediate selling pressure, pushing the spot price for silver to approximately $72.38 per ounce on Friday. Since the onset of the conflict in late February, the metal has consequently shed over one-fifth of its value.

Triple Leverage Amplifies the Downturn

These fundamental challenges are magnified for the WisdomTree product due to its three-times daily leverage. The ETC, which mirrors the daily performance of the Solactive Silver Commodity Futures SL Index, dropped from €167.03 to around €144.55 during the first week of April. The product's daily rebalancing mechanism renders it extremely sensitive to short-term volatility, accelerating moves in both directions.

From a technical perspective, the outlook has deteriorated. After key support levels from short-term moving averages were breached on April 2nd, technical analysts downgraded their assessment to a clear sell signal.

In the near term, price action remains tightly linked to geopolitical developments. A critical date for the market is tomorrow, April 6, the deadline set for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While underlying industrial demand from sectors like solar and electronics provides fundamental support for silver, significant downside risks persist for the leveraged ETC. As long as the US dollar maintains its strength and geopolitical uncertainty endures, the triple-leverage mechanism continues to pose a substantial threat.
