Silver's Delicate Balance: A Structural Deficit vs. a Solar Demand Slump

Silver climbs to $78.71 as persistent supply deficit meets plunging solar demand and rising interest rates, keeping prices in a $75-$82 range.

Silver is being tugged in opposite directions. The metal climbed to around $78.71 an ounce on Tuesday, reclaiming ground after consolidating near the $76 support level earlier in the week. That nearly 3% jump pointed to buyers stepping in at a key level, yet the broader picture is far from one-directional. While a persistent supply deficit provides a solid floor, a sharp slowdown in solar demand is pulling the rug from under a once-reliable growth story.

Hovering just below the psychologically important $80 mark, the white metal now faces a dual challenge: a physical market tightening for the sixth year running and a technological shift that is eroding one of its biggest industrial outlets. For 2026, analysts expect global consumption to outstrip output once again, with the shortfall running at an estimated 46 million ounces. But this chronic tightness, driven by the fact that roughly 70% of silver emerges as a byproduct of lead and zinc mining, is being offset by a weakening demand picture.

The solar industry has been a central pillar of silver’s industrial narrative. That pillar is cracking. Demand from photovoltaic manufacturers fell 6% in 2025 to 186.6 million ounces, and the outlook is worse – a drop to around 151 million ounces is projected for 2026. This is not a cycle of inventory adjustments. With silver prices elevated, module makers are aggressively “thrifting” – reducing the silver content per cell and testing alternative metallization routes. Chinese giants such as Longi Green Energy Technology, Jinko Solar and Shanghai Aiko Solar are moving to copper-based back-contact cells, with mass production expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026. A silver-free solar cell has already been launched.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

That shift has consequences beyond solar. As the largest single industrial consumer of the metal, solar’s retreat makes the entire market more sensitive. Overall industrial silver demand is projected to contract for a second consecutive year in 2026, with the electrical and electronics segment falling 6% according to the Silver Institute. While future applications in electric vehicles, AI data centers and 5G infrastructure require silver for its superior conductivity, these nascent channels cannot immediately compensate for a falt in solar procurement.

Geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, add another layer of complexity. The risk of disruption to the oil flows that run through the waterway – accounting for about 20% of global supply – has been fuelling inflation expectations. US producer, import and export prices accelerated sharply in April, and financial markets now see no rate cut from the Federal Reserve in 2025. Some traders are even pricing in a possible hike by December. For a non-yielding asset like silver, rising interest rates raise the opportunity cost of holding it.

The interplay of these forces leaves the market in a narrow corridor. Traders are eyeing a range of $75 to $82 an ounce until the next major catalyst – the Fed’s updated interest rate projections due in mid-June. The consensus from the LBMA survey puts average silver prices at $79.57 for 2026, though the forecast range is remarkably wide, from $42 to $165. A sustained break above $80 would open the door to fresh multi-year highs, but that outcome depends on whether inflation data allows the Fed to loosen policy – and whether solar manufacturers’ procurement lists show signs of stabilisation. For now, the deficit remains only a counterweight, not a driver.
