While its latest financial report showcased operational strength, Siemens AG finds its stock price under pressure. The Munich-based industrial giant posted record first-quarter figures and raised its full-year outlook, yet its shares have declined significantly since the start of the year. Investor concerns are centered on a major corporate restructuring plan and an imminent change in the company's financial leadership.

Strategic Overhaul and Leadership Transition Weigh on Sentiment

The primary driver behind the cautious investor stance is a planned corporate reorganization. Siemens intends to spin off 30% of its stake in its medical technology subsidiary, Siemens Healthineers, directly to its shareholders. The long-term goal is to reduce the holding to a purely financial investment. Such a significant structural shift demands considerable internal resources and raises complex regulatory considerations.

Compounding this uncertainty is a change at the top of the finance department in the midst of this sensitive phase. Veronika Bienert is scheduled to assume the role of Chief Financial Officer on April 1. Market observers view the combination of a strategic realignment and a high-profile personnel change as a short-term burden on the stock.

Operational Strength Fails to Impress the Market

Fundamentally, the company's performance was robust. New orders surged by 10% to €21.4 billion, pushing the order backlog to a historic high of €120 billion. Siemens is currently securing significantly more orders than it can fulfill. However, this operational strength has counted for little in the equity markets recently.

The share price recently fell below the closely watched 200-day moving average of €235.69. It closed trading on Friday at €218.80, representing a decline of approximately 9% since the beginning of the year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens?

Countermeasures: Share Buybacks and AI Focus

In response to the share price weakness, management is accelerating its share repurchase program. In March alone, the company bought back 18 million of its own shares, a move that mathematically boosts future earnings per share. Operationally, the company is sharpening its focus on artificial intelligence. Alongside a new declaration of intent with the U.S. Department of Energy, Siemens is collaborating with Nvidia to develop fully adaptive AI-powered factories. The first reference project is set to launch this year in Erlangen.

Investors are now looking ahead to two key dates. Early in the second quarter, management will disclose the precise structure and timeline for the Healthineers transaction. The subsequent quarterly report on May 13 will then provide concrete data on how well the core operational business is absorbing the costs associated with the impending transformation. Until then, the ongoing corporate overhaul is likely to continue dampening short-term enthusiasm for the stock.
