A major legal challenge that had stalled one of Europe's most significant rail vehicle tenders has been resolved, paving the way for Siemens Mobility to proceed with a multi-billion franc contract. Stadler Rail has withdrawn its objection to the Swiss Federal Railways' (SBB) decision, concluding a dispute that began in November 2025.

A Decisive Victory for German Engineering

The contract award, now finalized, represents a substantial win for Siemens' Mobility division and strengthens its order backlog considerably. Market observers see the outcome as clear evidence of the competitive strength of German rail technology in key foreign markets. Siemens ultimately persuaded SBB with a more economically efficient proposal, despite Stadler's argument that its own model, with 153 units already proven in service, was a lower-risk choice. The national railway operator had initially justified its selection by citing considerable lifetime cost advantages, with projected savings reaching into the hundreds of millions.

Contract Details and Manufacturing Impact

With the suspensive effect of the appeal now lifted, SBB can promptly sign the framework agreement. The deal is among the largest for rolling stock in Siemens' recent history. A firm initial call-off covers 116 double-decker trains, each with 540 seats, corresponding to an order value of approximately 2.1 billion Swiss francs. Should all options within the framework contract be exercised, the total volume could rise to around 3.6 billion Swiss francs for up to 200 units. These trains are destined for the Zurich S-Bahn network and western Switzerland.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens?

Production will be centered at the Siemens plant in Krefeld, Germany. This secures the facility's utilization for years to come, with the first units scheduled to enter regular passenger service from 2031 onward.

Transparency Dispute Led to Resolution

Stadler Rail cited heavily redacted procedural documents as the reason for dropping its legal recourse, stating that continuing the appeal was futile. This transparency dispute became the turning point that allowed the massive procurement process to move forward.
