Siemens Healthineers Streamlines Erlanger Campus with Headquarters Demolition
18.03.2026 - 04:17:26 | boerse-global.de
Siemens Healthineers is moving forward with plans to demolish its former headquarters building in Erlangen, bringing clarity to the future of a site that has been vacant since 2018. The company has formally submitted an application for the deconstruction of the prominent high-rise at Henkestrasse 127, concluding years of uncertainty surrounding the property.
Cost and Logistics of Decommissioning
The technical process of dismantling the structure is complex. Approximately 46,000 tonnes of concrete will need to be removed from the site. In a bid to minimize disruption for local residents, the corporation plans a layer-by-layer deconstruction following an initial stripping of the interior. Siemens Healthineers estimates the cost for this project to be in the mid-single-digit million-euro range, with work slated to commence in 2026.
A key driver for this decision was an economic assessment. After thorough evaluation, the management concluded that an energy-efficient refurbishment of the 14-story tower was not financially viable. This finding ultimately sealed the building's fate.
Historical Site Makes Way for Future Plans
The building, originally designed in the international style with a glass-aluminum facade by Nuremberg architect Wilhelm Schlegtendal in 1964, once served as the administrative center for the predecessor company, Siemens Reiniger Werke. While the landmark will disappear, the land itself will remain entirely within Siemens Healthineers' portfolio. Internal discussions regarding future use of the prime location are ongoing, though no definitive plans have been established.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Healthineers?
It is noted that the adjacent pavilion building, which houses a local Innovation Center, will not be affected by the demolition activities.
Financial Context and Strategic Rationale
This infrastructure consolidation comes as Siemens Healthineers shares trade near their 52-week low of €38.51. Market analysts view the Erlanger demolition not as a direct catalyst for the share price, but as a component of broader operational streamlining. The long-term strategic benefit lies in reducing maintenance costs for unused real estate and clearing space at the Erlangen campus for potential new investments.
